Impact of Reproductive Rights Education on Adults’ Understanding of Sexual and Reproductive Rights
Abstract
Reproductive rights education refers to structured learning that provides adults with knowledge about the rights, choices, responsibilities, and protections relating to reproductive health and decision-making, while sexual and reproductive rights refer to the rights of individuals to make informed decisions concerning their sexual and reproductive lives and to access relevant information, services, and protections without discrimination. Understanding these rights is important because adults need accurate knowledge to make informed decisions, recognize inappropriate restrictions, and understand the responsibilities associated with sexual and reproductive health. However, limited access to accurate rights-based information may affect adults’ understanding of these rights. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of reproductive rights education on adults’ understanding of sexual and reproductive rights. Reproductive rights education provides adults with opportunities to acquire accurate and practical information about sexual and reproductive rights. Through adult education programmes, health education activities, community learning, workshops, discussions, and other structured learning experiences, adults can learn about informed decision-making, bodily autonomy, access to appropriate reproductive health information and services, confidentiality, consent, and other relevant rights and responsibilities. Such education can help adults distinguish accurate information from misconceptions and understand the importance of making informed reproductive decisions. Adults’ understanding of sexual and reproductive rights refers to their ability to identify, explain, and appropriately interpret the rights and responsibilities associated with sexual and reproductive health. This understanding may include knowledge of informed choice, consent, access to relevant health information and services, privacy, confidentiality, and freedom from discrimination. Reproductive rights education may influence this understanding by providing adults with clear information and opportunities to discuss practical situations relating to the exercise and protection of sexual and reproductive rights. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will consist of adults participating in selected reproductive rights education or adult learning programmes within the study area. A sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to reproductive rights education and adults’ understanding of sexual and reproductive rights. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of reproductive rights education on adults’ understanding of sexual and reproductive rights. The study is expected to establish that reproductive rights education has a positive impact on adults’ understanding of sexual and reproductive rights. Adults with greater exposure to relevant educational experiences are expected to demonstrate better knowledge of informed reproductive decision-making, consent, confidentiality, access to appropriate information and services, and protection from discrimination. The findings may also identify areas of sexual and reproductive rights where adults require additional educational support. The findings are expected to have implications for adult education teaching and learning. Adult educators can incorporate rights-based reproductive health education into appropriate adult learning programmes using accurate, age-appropriate, and culturally relevant educational approaches. Discussions, case studies, question-and-answer activities, and practical examples can help learners understand complex rights-related concepts and apply acquired knowledge to real-life situations. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, reproductive health educators, community organizations, health education providers, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from improved understanding of their sexual and reproductive rights and responsibilities, while adult educators may gain useful information for developing relevant rights-based learning content. Community organizations and policymakers may also use the findings to strengthen educational initiatives that promote accurate knowledge of sexual and reproductive rights among adults. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate appropriate reproductive rights education into relevant learning activities. Adult educators should provide clear and accurate information on informed choice, consent, confidentiality, access to reproductive health information and services, and protection from discrimination. Learning activities should encourage respectful discussion and critical understanding of rights-related issues. Collaboration between adult education providers and relevant reproductive health institutions should also be encouraged. The study concludes that reproductive rights education can contribute to improved understanding of sexual and reproductive rights by equipping adults with accurate knowledge and practical awareness of their rights and responsibilities.
