Impact of Parent Education Programmes on Home-Based Learning Activities
Abstract
Parent education programmes are organized learning activities designed to provide parents with knowledge, skills, and practical guidance for supporting the development and education of their children, while home-based learning activities refer to educational activities carried out by parents and children within the home environment. Parents may lack adequate knowledge of effective learning methods, appropriate educational materials, and ways of creating supportive learning routines at home. Parent education programmes can equip parents with relevant skills and knowledge that may improve their ability to support children's learning outside the formal classroom. Therefore, this study will examine the impact of parent education programmes on home-based learning activities. Parent education programmes may include parenting classes, family literacy programmes, workshops, seminars, counselling sessions, and community-based educational activities. These programmes can provide parents with practical knowledge about child development, learning strategies, educational resources, communication, and ways of creating suitable learning environments at home. Through participation in these programmes, parents may develop greater confidence and competence in supporting their children's educational activities. Home-based learning activities may include reading, storytelling, educational games, drawing, writing practice, homework support, discussions, and other activities that reinforce children's learning outside the school environment. Parents who possess relevant educational knowledge may be better prepared to organize and participate in meaningful learning activities with their children. Parent education programmes can therefore contribute to home-based learning by strengthening parents' understanding of how to provide appropriate educational support within the household. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise parents participating in selected parent education programmes and those with school-age children. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure participation in parent education programmes and involvement in home-based learning activities. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that parent education programmes have a significant positive impact on home-based learning activities. It is expected that parents who participate in parent education programmes will demonstrate greater involvement in reading, educational games, homework support, storytelling, learning discussions, and other educational activities at home. The findings may further indicate that parent education strengthens parents' confidence and practical ability to create supportive learning experiences for their children. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning by emphasizing the importance of connecting formal education with learning experiences within the home. Parent educators may need to include practical demonstrations, family literacy activities, educational games, and simple strategies that parents can apply with their children. Such approaches can help parents translate knowledge acquired through education programmes into regular learning activities within the home environment. The study will be beneficial to parents, children, parent educators, teachers, adult education providers, schools, educational administrators, and policymakers. Parents may benefit from improved knowledge and practical skills for supporting children's learning, while teachers may benefit from increased parental support for learning activities. Adult education providers and policymakers may also use the findings to strengthen parent education programmes that promote children's educational development through home-based learning. The study recommends that parent education providers should incorporate practical home-learning strategies into parent education programmes and provide parents with simple, accessible learning resources. Parents should be encouraged to establish regular learning routines and engage children in age-appropriate educational activities at home. Schools should also encourage constructive communication with parents concerning home-based learning. It is concluded that effective parent education programmes can significantly improve home-based learning activities by equipping parents with the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills needed to support children's learning within the home.
