Impact of Nutrition Education on Adults’ Ability to Compare Food Nutrient Content
Abstract
Nutrition education provides adults with knowledge and skills for making informed decisions about the nutritional quality of foods. The ability to compare food nutrient content involves examining and distinguishing the amounts of nutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins, fats, fibre, vitamins, minerals, and other relevant components in different food products. Limited ability to interpret and compare nutrient information may affect adults’ food choices and overall dietary quality. This study therefore aims to examine the impact of nutrition education on adults’ ability to compare food nutrient content. Nutrition education can expose adults to the meaning and importance of major nutrients and explain how nutrient content differs among food products. Through lessons, practical demonstrations, discussions, food-label activities, and comparative exercises, adults can learn how to identify relevant nutrient information and distinguish between foods with different nutritional compositions. Such educational activities can provide practical skills that adults can apply when selecting and purchasing food. Adults’ ability to compare food nutrient content involves identifying relevant nutrient information, examining quantities, recognizing differences between products, and using available information to make informed comparisons. Nutrition education can strengthen these abilities by providing adults with opportunities to practise reading and comparing nutrient information from different foods. Improved understanding may enable adults to make more informed choices based on the nutritional characteristics of available food products. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise selected adult learners in the study area, from whom an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and practical assessment items designed to measure exposure to nutrition education and adults’ ability to compare food nutrient content. The research instrument will be subjected to expert validation, while its reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that nutrition education has a positive impact on adults’ ability to compare food nutrient content. Adults exposed to nutrition education are expected to demonstrate greater ability to identify relevant nutrient information, distinguish nutritional differences among food products, and make accurate comparisons. The findings may further suggest that practical learning activities involving actual food labels and product information can strengthen adults’ application of nutrition knowledge. The study may have implications for the teaching and learning of nutrition-related content in adult education programmes. Adult educators may need to emphasize practical exercises rather than relying solely on theoretical explanations. Activities such as comparing food labels, identifying nutrient differences, and discussing everyday food choices may make nutrition education more meaningful and help adults transfer acquired knowledge to real-life situations. The findings may benefit adult learners, adult educators, nutrition educators, households, community education providers, and organisations involved in health promotion. Adults may develop greater confidence in evaluating the nutritional characteristics of different foods, while educators may gain useful information for improving nutrition education approaches. Households may also benefit when adults apply acquired comparison skills during food selection and purchasing decisions. The study recommends that nutrition education programmes should incorporate practical activities that enable adults to examine and compare nutrient information from different food products. Adult educators should provide accessible learning materials, demonstrations, and repeated opportunities for practice. Relevant organisations should also support nutrition education initiatives that strengthen adults’ practical food-selection skills. The study concludes that nutrition education can contribute meaningfully to improving adults’ ability to compare food nutrient content when instruction is practical, understandable, and relevant to everyday food choices.
