Impact of Learning Centre Location on Participation in Adult Education Programmes
Abstract
Learning centre location refers to the geographical position and physical setting of a facility where adult education programmes are provided. Participation in adult education programmes involves adults’ enrolment, attendance, engagement, and continued involvement in organised learning activities. The location of a learning centre can influence how easily adults reach educational facilities, particularly where transportation difficulties, distance, or inconvenient surroundings exist. This study will examine the impact of learning centre location on participation in adult education programmes, with the purpose of determining whether the location of learning centres influences adults’ involvement in adult education programmes. The location of a learning centre may be considered in terms of distance from learners’ homes, proximity to transportation routes, accessibility of roads, travel time, and the general convenience of the centre’s geographical position. Centres located within reasonable distance of learners may reduce the time and effort required to attend learning activities. Conversely, centres situated far from learners or in difficult-to-reach areas may create practical barriers that discourage regular attendance and continued participation. Participation in adult education programmes refers to adults’ involvement in learning activities through enrolment, regular attendance, engagement in classroom activities, and continuation in the programme. Learning centre location may influence participation because adults often have to consider transportation, travel time, cost, and convenience when deciding whether to attend learning activities. A conveniently located centre may therefore make regular attendance easier, while an inconvenient location may reduce adults’ ability or willingness to participate consistently. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adult learners enrolled in selected adult education programmes. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure learning centre location and participation in adult education programmes. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that learning centre location has a significant impact on adults’ participation in adult education programmes. It is expected that adults attending learning centres located closer to their homes and within convenient transportation routes will demonstrate higher levels of attendance and continued participation. The study may further establish that distance, transportation convenience, and travel time are important location-related factors influencing adults’ participation. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of adult education. Adult education planners and programme administrators may need to consider the geographical distribution of learners when selecting locations for learning centres. Establishing centres in locations that are reasonably accessible to target learners may reduce physical barriers to attendance and create more favourable conditions for sustained participation. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, learning centre administrators, educational planners, community organisations, and adult education providers. Adult learners may benefit from learning centres that are conveniently located, while educators and administrators may gain information for planning programmes around the geographical needs of learners. Educational planners may also use the findings when determining suitable locations for future adult education centres. The study will recommend that adult education planners should consider learners’ residential distribution, transportation routes, travel time, and physical accessibility when selecting locations for learning centres. Existing centres should also assess location-related challenges faced by learners and explore practical measures for reducing them. The study will conclude that the location of learning centres can play an important role in promoting adults’ participation in adult education programmes.
