Impact of Labour Literacy on Adults’ Access to Employment Information

Abstract

Labour literacy refers to the knowledge and understanding that enable individuals to recognize, interpret, and use information concerning employment, workplace rights, job opportunities, employment conditions, and labour-related procedures, while access to employment information refers to the ability of adults to obtain relevant and timely information about available jobs, recruitment requirements, vacancies, career opportunities, and employment procedures. Adequate access to employment information can help adults identify suitable work opportunities and make informed employment decisions. However, limited knowledge of labour-related information and procedures may restrict adults’ ability to obtain and use available employment information. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of labour literacy on adults’ access to employment information. Labour literacy provides adults with knowledge about employment-related concepts, workplace expectations, labour rights, job-search procedures, recruitment processes, employment contracts, and sources of labour information. Through labour literacy education, adults can learn how to interpret vacancy announcements, understand basic employment requirements, identify legitimate employment opportunities, and recognize relevant labour institutions and information channels. Such knowledge can improve adults’ ability to navigate the employment information environment and make appropriate use of available opportunities. Adults’ access to employment information refers to their ability to obtain, understand, and use information about job vacancies, recruitment processes, employment requirements, career opportunities, and other work-related opportunities. Access may occur through employment agencies, career centres, newspapers, online platforms, community networks, public announcements, and other information sources. Labour literacy may influence this access by enabling adults to identify relevant information sources, interpret employment notices, understand application requirements, and distinguish useful employment information from information that does not meet their needs. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults within the selected study area, from which a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on adults’ labour literacy and their access to employment information. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of labour literacy on adults’ access to employment information. The study is expected to establish that labour literacy has a significant impact on adults’ access to employment information. Adults with higher levels of labour literacy are expected to demonstrate greater ability to identify relevant employment information, understand job requirements, locate appropriate employment sources, and interpret recruitment notices. The findings may also indicate that labour literacy improves adults’ confidence in navigating different employment information channels and responding appropriately to available opportunities. The findings will have implications for adult education by demonstrating the importance of incorporating employment-related knowledge into adult learning programmes. Adult educators can provide practical lessons on interpreting job advertisements, understanding employment requirements, identifying legitimate information sources, and navigating recruitment procedures. Such learning activities can equip adults with practical knowledge that enables them to make better use of employment information and respond more effectively to changing labour market opportunities. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, employment information providers, career guidance practitioners, community learning centres, employers, and policymakers. Adults may benefit from improved knowledge and ability to obtain relevant employment information, while adult educators may gain useful information for developing labour literacy programmes. Employment service providers and policymakers may also use the findings to strengthen educational initiatives that improve adults’ ability to access and understand employment-related information. The study will recommend that adult education programmes should incorporate practical labour literacy content that equips adults with knowledge of employment information sources, recruitment procedures, workplace requirements, and labour-related information. Adult educators should use realistic vacancy notices, employment forms, recruitment examples, and practical information-search activities to strengthen learners’ ability to interpret employment information. Collaboration between adult education providers and employment information institutions should also be encouraged. The study concludes that improved labour literacy can enhance adults’ ability to access, understand, and use employment information effectively.
