Impact of Interpersonal Communication Education on Adults’ Ability to Maintain Professional Relationships

Abstract

Professional relationships are interactions maintained among individuals within workplaces and other organized environments, and their quality can influence cooperation, trust, productivity, and effective performance. Adults are expected to communicate appropriately with colleagues, supervisors, clients, partners, and other professional contacts, yet poor communication may create misunderstanding, tension, or weakened working relationships. Interpersonal Communication Education can provide adults with knowledge and practical skills for effective interaction, respectful communication, active listening, and appropriate relationship management. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of Interpersonal Communication Education on adults’ ability to maintain professional relationships. Interpersonal Communication Education exposes adults to principles of effective interpersonal interaction, including active listening, empathy, verbal and non-verbal communication, feedback, respectful expression, and appropriate conflict management. Through discussions, role-playing, case studies, simulations, and group activities, adults can practice communicating with people who have different responsibilities, opinions, expectations, and communication styles. Learners may also develop greater awareness of how tone, language, responsiveness, and professional conduct influence interpersonal interactions. These educational experiences can help adults develop practical communication habits that support positive and sustainable professional relationships. Adults’ ability to maintain professional relationships refers to their capacity to establish and sustain respectful, cooperative, and appropriate interactions with people within professional environments. This ability involves communicating clearly, listening to others, responding appropriately to concerns, respecting professional boundaries, providing constructive feedback, and managing disagreements without unnecessarily damaging relationships. Interpersonal Communication Education may strengthen these abilities by improving adults’ communication competence and interpersonal awareness. Improved professional relationship skills can contribute to greater cooperation, trust, mutual respect, and effective interaction within organized work environments. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adult learners participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ ability to maintain professional relationships. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of Interpersonal Communication Education on adults’ ability to maintain professional relationships. The study is expected to establish that Interpersonal Communication Education has a positive impact on adults’ ability to maintain professional relationships. It is anticipated that adults exposed to relevant educational experiences will demonstrate improved ability to communicate respectfully, listen actively, respond appropriately to workplace concerns, manage interpersonal differences, and sustain constructive interactions. The study may further establish that practical communication activities provide adults with greater confidence in handling professional interactions and contribute to more consistent use of effective interpersonal communication strategies. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners in designing learning experiences that strengthen practical workplace communication and relationship-management skills. Adult Education programmes can incorporate professional communication scenarios, role-playing, group discussions, case studies, feedback exercises, and conflict-management activities that allow learners to practice interacting appropriately in different professional situations. Such approaches can help adults transfer communication knowledge into workplace environments and develop more effective habits for maintaining professional relationships. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, employers, workplaces, professional organizations, and other groups concerned with effective interpersonal interaction. It is expected to recommend greater emphasis on active listening, empathy, respectful communication, professional conduct, feedback, and interpersonal relationship skills within relevant Adult Education programmes. The study concludes that Interpersonal Communication Education can provide adults with useful knowledge and practical competencies for maintaining professional relationships, thereby supporting cooperation, mutual respect, effective communication, and healthier professional interactions.
