Impact of Heritage Learning Programmes on Adults’ Cultural Participation

Abstract

Heritage learning programmes refer to organized educational activities through which adults acquire knowledge about historical sites, cultural traditions, artefacts, local histories, traditional practices, and other aspects of cultural heritage, while cultural participation refers to the extent to which adults engage in activities that involve experiencing, supporting, learning about, and contributing to cultural life. Heritage learning can provide adults with knowledge and experiences that strengthen their understanding of cultural heritage. However, limited opportunities for heritage-related learning may reduce adults’ involvement in cultural activities. Therefore, this study examines the impact of heritage learning programmes on adults’ cultural participation. Heritage learning programmes may include guided heritage education, museum-based learning, historical site visits, cultural workshops, storytelling sessions, exhibitions, community heritage projects, and educational activities focused on local history and traditions. These programmes provide adults with opportunities to explore cultural resources, interact with knowledgeable individuals, interpret historical information, and develop greater understanding of their cultural environment. Through meaningful learning experiences, adults may develop greater appreciation of cultural heritage and become more interested in engaging with cultural activities. Cultural participation involves adults’ involvement in cultural events, exhibitions, heritage activities, traditional performances, cultural learning activities, artistic experiences, and other forms of engagement with cultural life. Participation may involve attending cultural events, visiting heritage sites, supporting cultural activities, learning about cultural practices, and contributing to cultural programmes. Heritage learning programmes may influence such participation by increasing adults’ cultural knowledge, awareness, interest, and appreciation. Consequently, adults who are exposed to relevant heritage learning experiences may demonstrate greater involvement in cultural activities. The study will adopt a correlational research design. The population will comprise adults who have participated in or have access to selected heritage learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure participation in heritage learning programmes and adults’ cultural participation. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and an appropriate inferential statistical technique to determine the impact of heritage learning programmes on adults’ cultural participation. The study is expected to establish that heritage learning programmes have a significant impact on adults’ cultural participation. Adults who have greater exposure to heritage learning opportunities are expected to demonstrate higher levels of involvement in cultural events, heritage activities, exhibitions, and other cultural experiences. The findings are also expected to indicate that increased knowledge and understanding of cultural heritage can encourage adults to become more interested in cultural activities. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of adults. Adult education facilitators may need to incorporate heritage-related learning experiences into appropriate adult education programmes. Field visits, storytelling, exhibitions, historical discussions, cultural workshops, and practical heritage activities can provide meaningful opportunities for adults to connect learning with cultural resources. Such approaches may make adult learning more relevant while encouraging greater appreciation of cultural heritage. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult education facilitators, heritage educators, cultural institutions, community organizations, programme administrators, and education planners. Adult learners may gain increased knowledge and appreciation of cultural heritage, while facilitators may gain insight into how heritage-based learning can encourage cultural involvement. Cultural institutions and organizations may benefit from greater adult engagement with heritage programmes, while education planners may use the findings to support educational initiatives that connect adult learning with cultural development. The study recommends that adult education institutions and cultural organizations should develop accessible heritage learning programmes that provide adults with meaningful opportunities to learn about cultural heritage. Facilitators should incorporate field visits, exhibitions, storytelling, cultural workshops, and interactive heritage activities into relevant programmes. Cultural institutions should also collaborate with adult education providers to create learning experiences that encourage adults to engage with heritage resources. In conclusion, effective heritage learning programmes can provide an important educational foundation for strengthening adults’ cultural participation.
