Impact of Health Education on Adults’ Ability to Identify Health Misinformation

Abstract

Health education refers to organized learning activities designed to provide individuals with accurate knowledge and skills for making informed health-related decisions, while the ability to identify health misinformation refers to adults’ capacity to recognize inaccurate, misleading, false, or unsupported health information. The ability to distinguish reliable health information from misinformation is increasingly important because adults may encounter health claims through social media, online platforms, interpersonal communication, and other information sources. This study will examine the impact of health education on adults’ ability to identify health misinformation. Health education can equip adults with knowledge about reliable health information, common characteristics of misleading health claims, appropriate sources of health information, and the importance of verifying health-related messages before accepting or sharing them. Educational activities may involve discussions, practical exercises, demonstrations, analysis of health messages, and guided evaluation of information sources. These learning approaches can strengthen adults’ critical understanding of health information and improve their ability to assess the credibility of health claims. The ability to identify health misinformation involves recognizing inaccurate claims, distinguishing evidence-based information from unsupported assertions, examining the source of information, and questioning health messages that appear misleading or contradictory to established health knowledge. Adults with stronger health information evaluation skills may be better positioned to avoid accepting or spreading inaccurate health claims. Health education can therefore provide the knowledge and critical evaluation skills required to improve adults’ ability to identify health misinformation. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected health education and adult learning programmes. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a health misinformation identification assessment designed to measure participants’ exposure to health education and their ability to distinguish accurate health information from misinformation. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that health education has a positive impact on adults’ ability to identify health misinformation. It is expected that adults who receive relevant health education will demonstrate greater ability to recognize inaccurate and misleading health claims, evaluate health information sources, and distinguish reliable information from misinformation compared with adults who have limited exposure to health education. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in Adult Education by emphasizing the need to develop adults’ ability to critically evaluate health information. Adult educators can incorporate real-life health messages, source-evaluation exercises, group discussions, and practical information-checking activities into health education programmes. These approaches can make learning more relevant and help adults apply their knowledge when encountering health information in everyday situations. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, health educators, healthcare professionals, community organizations, and institutions involved in health promotion and adult learning. Adults may benefit from improved skills for evaluating health information, while educators may gain useful evidence for developing health information literacy activities. Healthcare and community organizations may also use the findings to strengthen educational efforts aimed at reducing the influence of misleading health information among adults. The study recommends that health education programmes should incorporate practical activities that teach adults how to evaluate health claims, identify unreliable sources, and verify health information before accepting or sharing it. Adult educators should use participatory teaching methods, examples of common health information problems, and source-evaluation exercises to strengthen critical health information skills. Collaboration between adult educators and health professionals should also be encouraged in developing accurate and relevant learning materials. The study concludes that effective health education can improve adults’ ability to identify health misinformation and make more informed decisions about health information.
