Impact of Gender-Based Violence Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Available Support Services
Abstract
Gender-based violence education refers to structured learning that provides adults with knowledge about the forms, causes, warning signs, prevention, and appropriate responses to gender-based violence, while knowledge of available support services refers to adults’ understanding of the organizations, facilities, professionals, and mechanisms through which survivors or individuals at risk can obtain assistance. Knowledge of available support services is important because adults who are aware of where and how to seek appropriate assistance may be better able to respond to gender-based violence and support affected individuals. However, inadequate information about available services may limit timely access to appropriate support. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of gender-based violence education on adults’ knowledge of available support services. Gender-based violence education provides adults with information about different forms of gender-based violence, including physical, sexual, psychological, and other forms of abuse, as well as available responses and sources of assistance. Through adult education programmes, community awareness activities, workshops, discussions, and other structured learning opportunities, adults can learn about organizations and institutions that provide counselling, healthcare, legal assistance, protection, and other forms of support. Such educational experiences can help adults become more familiar with the types of assistance available and the circumstances in which different services may be appropriate. Adults’ knowledge of available support services refers to their ability to identify relevant sources of assistance and understand the basic functions of such services. This may include knowledge of healthcare facilities, counselling services, social welfare organizations, legal assistance providers, protection services, and appropriate referral channels. Gender-based violence education may improve this knowledge by providing adults with accurate information about where support can be obtained, the types of assistance provided, and appropriate steps for seeking help. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will consist of adults participating in selected adult education programmes within the study area. A sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to gender-based violence education and adults’ knowledge of available support services. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of gender-based violence education on adults’ knowledge of available support services. The study is expected to establish that gender-based violence education has a positive impact on adults’ knowledge of available support services. Adults who have greater exposure to relevant educational programmes are expected to demonstrate better knowledge of organizations and institutions that provide counselling, healthcare, legal assistance, protection, and other forms of support. The findings may also identify areas where adults have limited knowledge of available services and require additional educational information. The findings are expected to have implications for adult education teaching and learning. Adult educators can incorporate information about gender-based violence support services into relevant learning programmes through discussions, case studies, practical examples, and referral-information activities. Learning materials should present clear and understandable information about different support services and the types of assistance they provide. This approach can make adult learning more responsive to issues that affect individuals, families, and communities. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, community education providers, social welfare organizations, healthcare providers, counselling professionals, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from improved knowledge of where appropriate assistance can be obtained, while adult educators may gain useful information for developing relevant educational content. Support organizations and policymakers may also use the findings to strengthen awareness activities and improve the dissemination of information about available services. The study recommends that adult education programmes should include appropriate information on gender-based violence support services. Adult educators should use clear, accessible, and practical learning approaches to help adults identify relevant sources of assistance and understand the types of support available. Collaboration between adult education providers and organizations offering gender-based violence services should also be encouraged to improve the accuracy and accessibility of information provided to adult learners. The study concludes that gender-based violence education can contribute to improved adult knowledge of available support services by equipping learners with relevant information about where and how appropriate assistance can be obtained.
