Impact of Food-Safety Education on Adults’ Ability to Identify Unsafe Food-Handling Practices

Abstract

Food-safety education refers to learning activities that provide adults with knowledge and skills for recognizing and applying safe practices when handling, preparing, storing, and serving food. The ability to identify unsafe food-handling practices is important because inappropriate handling may increase the risk of food contamination and spoilage. However, limited food-safety knowledge may make it difficult for adults to recognize practices that can compromise food safety. Therefore, this study examines the impact of food-safety education on adults’ ability to identify unsafe food-handling practices. Food-safety education can expose adults to important principles of hygienic food handling, including personal cleanliness, proper preparation practices, appropriate storage, prevention of cross-contamination, and safe handling of food and utensils. Through demonstrations, illustrations, practical examples, and identification exercises, adults can learn to distinguish safe practices from unsafe ones. Such educational activities can improve their awareness of behaviours that may compromise food safety. Adults’ ability to identify unsafe food-handling practices refers to their capacity to recognize behaviours or procedures that may make food unsafe or unsuitable for consumption. This includes identifying inappropriate handling, inadequate hygiene, improper storage, cross-contamination risks, and other unsafe practices. Food-safety education can strengthen this ability by providing adults with clear information and practical opportunities to examine different food-handling situations. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will consist of adults participating in selected adult education programmes, while an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a practical food-safety identification assessment designed to measure exposure to food-safety education and adults’ ability to identify unsafe food-handling practices. The data obtained will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that food-safety education has a positive impact on adults’ ability to identify unsafe food-handling practices. It is expected that adults exposed to relevant food-safety education will demonstrate improved ability to recognize inappropriate hygiene practices, identify potential cross-contamination situations, recognize improper storage practices, and distinguish unsafe food-handling behaviours from safer practices. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in adult education programmes. Facilitators can incorporate practical demonstrations, food-handling scenarios, visual examples, and identification activities into food-safety lessons. These approaches can make learning more practical and help adults recognize food-safety risks that may occur during everyday household food preparation and handling. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult education facilitators, households, community health educators, food-safety organizations, and policymakers. Adults may benefit from improved ability to recognize unsafe food-handling practices, while facilitators can use the findings to strengthen practical food-safety education. Community organizations may also use the findings to develop educational activities that promote safer food-handling awareness. The study will recommend that practical food-safety identification activities be incorporated into relevant adult education programmes. Facilitators should use realistic food-handling scenarios, demonstrations, illustrations, and guided exercises to help adults recognize unsafe practices. The study concludes that effective food-safety education can improve adults’ ability to identify unsafe food-handling practices and support greater awareness of safe food-handling behaviours.
