Impact of First-Aid Education on Adults’ Ability to Respond to Minor Injuries
Abstract
First-aid education refers to the provision of knowledge and practical skills that enable individuals to provide immediate assistance to a person who experiences an injury or sudden health-related incident before professional medical care is available. Adults’ ability to respond to minor injuries involves their capacity to recognize common injuries, remain calm, apply appropriate first-aid measures, and seek further assistance when necessary. Inadequate first-aid knowledge may result in inappropriate responses, delayed assistance, or worsening of otherwise manageable injuries. This study therefore aims to examine the impact of first-aid education on adults’ ability to respond effectively to minor injuries. First-aid education introduces adults to basic principles and procedures for handling minor injuries such as cuts, bruises, burns, sprains, strains, and minor bleeding. The education may include demonstrations, practical exercises, instructional discussions, and supervised practice. Adults learn how to assess an injury, protect themselves and the injured person, apply appropriate basic care, and recognize situations that require professional medical attention. Such learning provides practical knowledge that can be applied during everyday situations at home, in workplaces, and within communities. Adults’ ability to respond to minor injuries involves knowledge, practical competence, judgment, and confidence in applying appropriate first-aid procedures. Effective response requires individuals to identify the nature of an injury, determine the immediate action needed, use basic first-aid materials correctly, and avoid harmful practices. First-aid education can strengthen these abilities by providing structured information and opportunities for practical application. Increased exposure to appropriate first-aid instruction may therefore improve adults’ readiness to provide immediate and suitable assistance when minor injuries occur. The study will adopt a quasi-experimental research design to determine the impact of first-aid education on adults’ ability to respond to minor injuries. The population will consist of selected adult learners, while a suitable sample will be drawn using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a first-aid knowledge and response skills assessment administered before and after exposure to first-aid education. The data obtained will be analyzed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine changes in participants’ ability to respond to minor injuries. The study is expected to establish that adults who receive first-aid education demonstrate improved knowledge and practical ability to respond to minor injuries compared with their level of performance before the educational intervention. Participants are also expected to show greater confidence in identifying minor injuries, applying basic first-aid measures, and determining when additional medical assistance is necessary. The findings may indicate that practical first-aid education can strengthen adults’ preparedness to provide timely and appropriate initial assistance. The findings are expected to have implications for teaching and learning in adult education. Adult educators can incorporate practical demonstrations, simulations, role-play activities, and hands-on exercises into first-aid learning programmes to improve skill acquisition and retention. Learning activities that reflect common situations encountered by adults may make first-aid education more practical and relevant. Regular practice and assessment can also help learners retain procedures and develop greater confidence in applying first-aid knowledge appropriately. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, community organizations, workplaces, families, and other institutions that provide adult learning programmes. Adults may benefit from improved preparedness to manage minor injuries before professional assistance is obtained, while educators may gain useful information for developing practical health and safety learning activities. Community and workplace organizations may also use the findings to strengthen first-aid training initiatives and promote safer responses to everyday injuries. The study recommends that adult education programmes should include accessible and practical first-aid education, supported by demonstrations, simulations, supervised practice, and periodic refresher sessions. Adult educators should use simple, practical, and context-relevant teaching approaches to strengthen learners’ understanding and application of first-aid procedures. First-aid learning should also emphasize recognizing situations that require professional medical attention rather than attempting to manage injuries beyond the learner’s competence. The study concludes that appropriate first-aid education has the potential to improve adults’ ability to respond safely and effectively to minor injuries.
