Impact of Financial Numeracy Education on Adults’ Understanding of Bank Charges

Abstract

Financial numeracy education refers to structured learning that develops adults’ ability to understand and apply basic numerical concepts to everyday financial situations, while understanding of bank charges refers to adults’ ability to recognize, interpret, calculate, and explain the fees and charges associated with banking services. Understanding bank charges is important because adults who are able to interpret financial charges can better understand the costs associated with their accounts and banking transactions. However, limited financial numeracy may make it difficult for some adults to interpret charges correctly or determine their financial implications. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of financial numeracy education on adults’ understanding of bank charges. Financial numeracy education provides adults with practical numerical skills that can be applied to banking and other financial activities. Through adult education programmes, financial literacy classes, workshops, and practical learning activities, adults can learn how to work with percentages, fixed fees, transaction charges, service costs, account maintenance fees, and other numerical information commonly presented in banking transactions. These learning experiences can help adults develop the confidence and competence required to examine financial charges, perform basic calculations, and understand the costs attached to banking services. Adults’ understanding of bank charges refers to their ability to identify different types of charges, interpret the information provided by financial institutions, and determine the financial implications of such charges. This may include understanding transaction fees, account maintenance charges, transfer fees, withdrawal charges, and other applicable banking costs. Financial numeracy education may improve this understanding by enabling adults to apply basic numerical skills when examining charges and determining the actual amounts associated with banking transactions. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will consist of adults participating in selected adult education or financial education programmes within the study area. A sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and practical financial numeracy tasks designed to measure exposure to financial numeracy education and adults’ understanding of bank charges. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of financial numeracy education on adults’ understanding of bank charges. The study is expected to establish that financial numeracy education has a positive impact on adults’ understanding of bank charges. Adults who have greater exposure to financial numeracy education are expected to demonstrate better ability to identify, interpret, and calculate common bank charges. The study may also reveal specific areas of difficulty, particularly in understanding percentage-based charges, multiple transaction fees, or the cumulative cost of repeated banking transactions. The findings are expected to have implications for adult education teaching and learning. Adult educators can incorporate practical financial numeracy activities into adult learning programmes using realistic banking examples. Exercises involving the calculation and comparison of bank charges can help learners connect numerical concepts with everyday financial experiences. Such practical approaches can strengthen adults’ ability to apply numerical knowledge when dealing with banking information. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, financial literacy providers, banks, community education organizations, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from improved ability to understand and evaluate banking costs, while adult educators may gain useful information for developing practical financial numeracy lessons. Financial institutions and policymakers may also use the findings to strengthen financial literacy initiatives that help adults understand information about banking charges. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate practical financial numeracy education focused on everyday banking transactions. Adult educators should use worked examples, transaction scenarios, fee comparisons, and calculation exercises to improve learners’ understanding of bank charges. Financial institutions should also support financial education initiatives by providing clear and accessible information about applicable charges. The study concludes that financial numeracy education can contribute to improved understanding of bank charges by equipping adults with the numerical knowledge and practical skills required to interpret and evaluate banking costs.
