Impact of Ethics Education on Adults’ Understanding of Confidentiality Principles
Abstract
Confidentiality is an important ethical principle that requires personal, professional, or sensitive information entrusted to an individual or organization to be protected from unauthorized disclosure or inappropriate access. Understanding confidentiality principles enables adults to recognize the importance of protecting information, respecting privacy, and handling sensitive details responsibly. However, limited knowledge of confidentiality may result in inappropriate sharing or disclosure of information in personal, occupational, community, healthcare, and other settings. Ethics Education can provide adults with the knowledge and awareness needed to understand confidentiality and appreciate the responsibilities associated with protecting information. This study therefore examines the impact of Ethics Education on adults’ understanding of confidentiality principles. Ethics Education can introduce adults to fundamental concepts associated with confidentiality, privacy, trust, responsibility, consent, and appropriate information handling. Through structured lessons, discussions, case studies, role-play, and analysis of everyday situations, learners can examine circumstances in which information should be protected and situations in which disclosure may require appropriate justification or authorization. These learning activities can help adults understand that confidentiality involves more than keeping information secret; it also requires responsible handling of information and respect for the privacy of individuals. Such educational experiences may strengthen adults’ awareness of their ethical responsibilities. The understanding of confidentiality principles involves recognizing why sensitive information should be protected, identifying situations involving confidential information, and understanding the responsibilities associated with accessing, using, storing, and sharing such information. Adults need to distinguish appropriate information sharing from unauthorized disclosure and appreciate the importance of maintaining trust when handling personal or sensitive information. Ethics Education can strengthen this understanding by exposing learners to realistic confidentiality scenarios and encouraging them to examine the ethical considerations involved. Improved understanding may promote more responsible information-handling practices in everyday and professional environments. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adult learners participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ understanding of confidentiality principles. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of Ethics Education on adults’ understanding of confidentiality principles. The study is expected to establish that Ethics Education has a positive impact on adults’ understanding of confidentiality principles. Adults exposed to relevant ethics education are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of privacy, responsible information handling, unauthorized disclosure, and the importance of protecting sensitive information. The expected findings may further indicate that practical engagement with confidentiality-related situations improves adults’ ability to recognize ethical responsibilities associated with information and strengthens their confidence in making appropriate judgments when handling sensitive details. The findings are expected to have implications for the content and delivery of Adult Education programmes. Adult Education practitioners may need to incorporate practical confidentiality scenarios into ethics-related learning activities so that learners can apply ethical principles to situations they may encounter in everyday and occupational settings. Case studies, group discussions, role-play, and information-handling exercises can help adults identify appropriate and inappropriate approaches to confidential information. Such activities can make confidentiality education more practical while strengthening learners’ awareness of privacy, trust, and ethical responsibility. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, programme planners, employers, community organizations, researchers, and other stakeholders concerned with responsible information handling. It may provide useful evidence on the contribution of Ethics Education to adults’ understanding of confidentiality principles. The study recommends greater integration of confidentiality and privacy education into relevant Adult Education programmes, with emphasis on responsible information handling, respect for privacy, and appropriate disclosure. It concludes that strengthening adults’ understanding of confidentiality principles can promote ethical conduct, protect individual privacy, and support trust in personal, occupational, and community relationships.
