Impact of Environmental Education Programmes on Waste Management Practices among Adult Learners

Abstract

Environmental education programmes refer to organized learning activities designed to provide individuals with knowledge, skills, attitudes, and awareness needed to understand environmental issues and adopt responsible environmental practices, while waste management practices involve the proper handling, storage, sorting, collection, reuse, recycling, treatment, and disposal of waste. Effective environmental education is important for helping adult learners understand the environmental consequences of improper waste management and develop responsible practices. However, inadequate environmental knowledge may contribute to poor waste management practices among adult learners. Therefore, this study will examine the impact of environmental education programmes on waste management practices among adult learners. Environmental education programmes expose adult learners to concepts such as waste generation, waste classification, waste reduction, reuse, recycling, composting, proper storage, collection, and safe disposal. Through classroom instruction, workshops, demonstrations, group discussions, environmental campaigns, and community-based learning activities, learners can acquire practical knowledge about managing different types of waste. These programmes can also help adults understand the relationship between improper waste disposal, environmental pollution, sanitation problems, and community health. Waste management practices among adult learners refer to the actions learners take in handling and disposing of waste responsibly. These practices may include separating waste at the point of generation, using appropriate waste containers, reducing unnecessary waste, reusing materials, recycling recyclable items, maintaining clean surroundings, and disposing of waste through approved methods. Adult learners who receive relevant environmental education may be better prepared to apply appropriate waste management practices in their homes, learning environments, and communities. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adult learners enrolled in selected adult education programmes within the study area. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a practical assessment designed to measure exposure to environmental education programmes and waste management practices. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that environmental education programmes have a significant positive impact on waste management practices among adult learners. It is expected that adult learners exposed to environmental education programmes will demonstrate better knowledge of waste management and greater adoption of appropriate waste handling and disposal practices. The study may also establish that practical environmental education improves learners’ ability to apply waste reduction, reuse, recycling, and proper disposal practices. The findings will have implications for adult education teaching and learning by emphasizing the importance of practical environmental education in developing responsible waste management behaviour. Adult education facilitators may incorporate waste-sorting demonstrations, recycling exercises, environmental projects, field activities, case studies, and practical sanitation activities into environmental education programmes. Such approaches can help adult learners connect environmental knowledge with practical waste management activities. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult education facilitators, environmental educators, community leaders, environmental organizations, local authorities, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from improved knowledge and practical skills for managing waste, while facilitators may gain useful information for strengthening environmental education programmes. Environmental organizations and local authorities may also use the findings to design educational initiatives that promote improved waste management practices among adults. The study will recommend that environmental education programmes for adult learners should place greater emphasis on practical waste management skills, including waste separation, reduction, reuse, recycling, storage, and safe disposal. Adult education providers should organize regular environmental demonstrations, sanitation exercises, and community-based waste management projects to reinforce learning. Relevant authorities and environmental organizations should also support continuous environmental education for adults. The study concludes that effective environmental education programmes can contribute to improved waste management practices among adult learners.
