Impact of Energy-Literacy Education on Adults’ Understanding of Household Energy Use

Abstract

Energy-literacy education refers to organized learning activities that provide adults with knowledge about energy sources, consumption, efficiency, costs, and responsible energy practices, while understanding of household energy use refers to adults’ knowledge of how energy is consumed within the home and the factors that influence household energy consumption. Adequate understanding of household energy use can help adults make informed decisions about energy consumption, equipment use, and conservation. However, limited energy knowledge may contribute to inefficient consumption and difficulty in evaluating household energy needs. This study therefore aims to examine the impact of energy-literacy education on adults’ understanding of household energy use. Energy-literacy education can expose adults to information about common household energy sources, energy-consuming appliances, consumption patterns, energy efficiency, electricity use, and basic principles of energy conservation. Through discussions, demonstrations, practical activities, household examples, and instructional materials, adults can learn how different household activities contribute to energy consumption. Such education can also help learners understand the relationship between energy use, household expenditure, resource conservation, and environmental sustainability. Understanding household energy use involves knowledge of the major sources of household energy, common energy-consuming activities, appliance consumption, energy-use patterns, efficiency practices, and factors that influence household energy demand. Adults who receive relevant energy-literacy education may develop clearer knowledge of how energy is consumed in their homes and how different practices affect overall usage. The study will therefore investigate whether energy-literacy education contributes to improved understanding of household energy use among adults. The study will adopt an appropriate research design, such as a descriptive survey or quasi-experimental design, depending on the study setting. The population will comprise selected adult learners, from whom a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire or knowledge assessment designed to measure exposure to energy-literacy education and adults’ understanding of household energy use. The data obtained will be analysed using suitable descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that exposure to energy-literacy education improves adults’ understanding of household energy use. Adults who receive relevant instruction are expected to demonstrate better knowledge of household energy sources, consumption patterns, energy-consuming appliances, efficiency considerations, and factors affecting energy demand. These expected findings would emphasize the importance of adult education in developing practical knowledge for understanding household energy consumption. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of energy-related issues within adult education programmes. Adult educators can incorporate household energy examples, appliance demonstrations, energy-use exercises, discussions, and practical learning activities into lessons. These approaches can help adults connect energy concepts with their everyday household experiences and improve their ability to understand how different activities influence energy consumption. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, households, adult educators, community organizations, energy educators, environmental organizations, and policymakers. Adults may gain improved knowledge for understanding their household energy consumption, while educators may obtain useful information for designing practical energy-literacy programmes. Households and community organizations may also use the findings to strengthen awareness of responsible energy use and encourage informed household energy decisions. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate practical energy-literacy education covering household energy sources, consumption patterns, appliance use, energy efficiency, and responsible energy practices. Demonstrations, household examples, visual materials, and practical exercises should be used to strengthen understanding. Community-based energy education should also be encouraged to make energy information more accessible to adults. The study concludes that effective energy-literacy education can improve adults’ understanding of household energy use and support more informed and responsible energy-related decisions.
