Impact of Digital Skills Education on Technology Adoption among Adult Learners

Abstract

Digital skills education refers to organized learning activities designed to equip individuals with the knowledge and practical abilities required to use digital devices, applications, platforms, and technologies effectively, while technology adoption refers to the willingness and ability of individuals to accept, begin using, and regularly apply available technologies for learning, communication, work, and everyday activities. Technology adoption is increasingly important for adult learners because digital technologies provide access to information, educational opportunities, communication channels, and useful services. However, limited digital skills may discourage adults from adopting and effectively using available technologies. Therefore, this study will examine the impact of digital skills education on technology adoption among adult learners. Digital skills education exposes adult learners to practical competencies such as operating digital devices, navigating software and applications, accessing online platforms, searching for information, communicating digitally, managing electronic files, and using internet-based services. Through demonstrations, practical exercises, guided instruction, and hands-on learning activities, adult learners can develop greater familiarity with digital technologies. These learning experiences can reduce difficulties associated with technology use and provide learners with the skills required to interact effectively with different digital tools. Technology adoption among adult learners involves the acceptance, acquisition, initial use, continued use, and practical application of digital technologies for relevant purposes. Adult learners who possess adequate digital skills may be better prepared to understand the functions of different technologies and apply them to learning, communication, employment, business, and personal activities. Digital skills education can therefore provide learners with the practical knowledge and confidence required to adopt appropriate technologies and incorporate them into their everyday activities. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adult learners enrolled in selected adult education programmes within the study area. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a practical digital skills assessment designed to measure exposure to digital skills education and technology adoption among adult learners. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that digital skills education has a significant positive impact on technology adoption among adult learners. It is expected that adult learners who receive greater exposure to digital skills education will demonstrate greater willingness and ability to adopt and use relevant technologies. The study may also establish that practical digital training improves learners’ confidence, competence, and readiness to incorporate technology into their educational, occupational, and everyday activities. The findings will have implications for adult education teaching and learning by emphasizing the need to integrate practical digital skills education into adult learning programmes. Adult education facilitators may incorporate hands-on demonstrations, guided technology exercises, digital projects, and task-based learning activities into instruction. Such approaches can help learners develop practical competence and encourage them to apply digital technologies beyond the learning environment. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult education facilitators, digital skills trainers, educational institutions, community learning centres, technology providers, programme planners, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from improved digital competence and greater ability to adopt useful technologies, while facilitators may gain information for developing more effective digital skills programmes. Educational institutions and policymakers may also use the findings to strengthen digital inclusion initiatives and expand opportunities for adults to acquire relevant technology skills. The study will recommend that adult education programmes should provide regular and practical digital skills education covering the use of relevant devices, applications, online platforms, and digital services. Adult education providers should emphasize hands-on learning and repeated practice to strengthen learners’ confidence and competence in technology use. Community learning centres and relevant organizations should also provide accessible digital training opportunities for adult learners. The study concludes that effective digital skills education can contribute to increased technology adoption among adult learners.
