Impact of Cultural Learning Centres on Lifelong Learning Participation among Adults
Abstract
Cultural learning centres are community-based educational spaces that provide opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge, skills, and cultural understanding through organized learning activities, while lifelong learning participation refers to adults’ continued involvement in educational activities throughout different stages of life. Participation in lifelong learning can enable adults to update their knowledge, develop new competencies, and respond effectively to changing personal, social, and occupational demands. However, inadequate access to suitable learning environments may limit adults’ continued involvement in educational activities. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of cultural learning centres on lifelong learning participation among adults. Cultural learning centres provide accessible environments where adults can engage in educational activities beyond conventional formal education. Their activities may include cultural classes, lectures, workshops, exhibitions, discussions, practical learning sessions, and other community-based educational programmes. By bringing learning opportunities closer to adults and connecting education with cultural interests and community resources, these centres can create supportive environments that encourage continued learning. The availability, accessibility, educational activities, and learning resources provided by such centres may influence adults’ willingness to remain engaged in learning. Lifelong learning participation among adults refers to adults’ involvement in formal, non-formal, and informal learning activities at different stages of their lives. It may involve attending courses, workshops, training programmes, educational discussions, cultural classes, or other structured learning opportunities. Cultural learning centres may influence such participation by providing convenient learning spaces, relevant educational activities, opportunities for interaction, and resources that encourage adults to continue acquiring knowledge and skills. Regular exposure to these learning opportunities can strengthen adults’ interest in continuous education. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults who have access to selected cultural learning centres within the study area, from which a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on the availability and use of cultural learning centres and adults’ participation in lifelong learning activities. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of cultural learning centres on lifelong learning participation among adults. The study is expected to establish that cultural learning centres have a significant impact on lifelong learning participation among adults. Adults who have access to functional cultural learning centres are expected to demonstrate greater involvement in continuing educational activities. The findings may also indicate that accessible learning spaces, relevant programmes, cultural resources, and opportunities for interaction provided by these centres encourage adults to maintain interest in learning beyond conventional educational settings. The findings will have implications for the organization and delivery of adult education programmes. Adult educators may use cultural learning centres as alternative learning environments for providing flexible and relevant educational opportunities to adults. The integration of cultural activities with educational programmes may also make learning more meaningful and attractive to adult learners. Such centres can provide opportunities for experiential learning, group discussions, practical activities, and community-based educational experiences that support continued learning. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, cultural learning centre administrators, community organizations, educational institutions, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from increased access to convenient and relevant learning opportunities, while educators may gain useful information for designing programmes that encourage sustained educational involvement. Administrators and policymakers may also use the findings to improve the provision, organization, and accessibility of cultural learning centres for adult education purposes. The study will recommend that cultural learning centres should provide diverse, accessible, and relevant educational programmes that respond to the learning interests and needs of adults. Adult education providers should strengthen collaboration with cultural learning centres to expand opportunities for continuous learning. Adequate learning resources, trained facilitators, flexible schedules, and suitable learning facilities should also be provided to encourage sustained participation. The study concludes that well-organized cultural learning centres can provide valuable educational environments that support lifelong learning participation among adults.
