Impact of Communication Education on Adults’ Ability to Clarify Misunderstandings

Abstract

Misunderstandings are common in interpersonal, family, workplace, community, and social interactions and may arise when messages are unclear, incomplete, incorrectly interpreted, or communicated without sufficient context. The ability to clarify misunderstandings is therefore important for maintaining effective relationships, preventing unnecessary conflict, and promoting mutual understanding. Communication Education can provide adults with knowledge and practical skills for expressing themselves clearly, asking appropriate questions, listening carefully, and confirming the meaning of messages. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of Communication Education on adults’ ability to clarify misunderstandings. Communication Education exposes adults to important principles and practices of effective communication, including active listening, questioning, feedback, clarification, appropriate language use, and non-verbal communication. Through discussions, demonstrations, role-playing, and practical communication exercises, adults can learn how to identify situations in which misunderstanding has occurred and apply appropriate strategies to resolve uncertainty. Learning experiences may also encourage adults to avoid assumptions, seek additional information, restate unclear messages, and confirm what another person intended to communicate. These skills can make communication more accurate and reduce avoidable errors in everyday interactions. Adults’ ability to clarify misunderstandings refers to their capacity to recognize when a message or situation has been incorrectly understood and take appropriate steps to establish the intended meaning. This ability involves listening attentively, identifying points of uncertainty, asking relevant questions, explaining one’s interpretation, and confirming information before reaching conclusions. Communication Education may strengthen these abilities by giving adults structured opportunities to practice clarification techniques in realistic situations. Improved clarification skills can help adults resolve communication difficulties constructively and maintain more effective interactions with others. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adult learners participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ ability to clarify misunderstandings. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of Communication Education on adults’ ability to clarify misunderstandings. The study is expected to establish that Communication Education contributes positively to adults’ ability to clarify misunderstandings. It is anticipated that adults who receive relevant communication education will demonstrate improved ability to identify unclear messages, ask effective clarification questions, listen to alternative explanations, and confirm information before making conclusions. The study may also establish that practical communication activities provide adults with greater confidence in addressing misunderstandings and encourage them to approach unclear situations through constructive dialogue rather than assumptions or immediate disagreement. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners in developing learning activities that strengthen practical communication competence. Communication Education programmes can incorporate role-playing, group discussions, communication scenarios, listening exercises, and problem-solving activities that allow adults to practice identifying and resolving misunderstandings. Such activities can help learners transfer communication knowledge into everyday interactions and develop greater confidence in seeking clarification when messages, instructions, opinions, or intentions are unclear. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, families, workplaces, community organizations, and other groups concerned with effective interpersonal communication. It is expected to recommend greater emphasis on practical clarification techniques, active listening, questioning, feedback, and confirmation of meaning within relevant Adult Education programmes. The study concludes that Communication Education can serve as an important means of strengthening adults’ ability to clarify misunderstandings and promoting clearer, more respectful, and more constructive communication in everyday situations.
