Impact of Climate Education on Adults’ Understanding of Climate Adaptation Strategies

Abstract

Climate education refers to the process of providing individuals with knowledge and awareness about climate change, its causes, effects, and appropriate responses, while understanding of climate adaptation strategies concerns adults’ knowledge of practical approaches for adjusting to climate-related changes and reducing their potential effects. As climate change continues to create environmental and social challenges, adults need adequate knowledge to understand suitable adaptation measures that can be applied in households, workplaces, and communities. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of climate education on adults’ understanding of climate adaptation strategies. Climate education can expose adults to concepts such as climate variability, climate-related hazards, vulnerability, resilience, preparedness, and adaptation. Through structured learning activities, adults can learn about practical adaptation strategies including water conservation, improved household preparedness, appropriate land-use practices, heat-risk reduction, protection of household resources, and other measures suitable for changing environmental conditions. Such education can help learners connect climate information with practical actions and improve their awareness of available adaptation options. Understanding of climate adaptation strategies involves the ability of adults to explain, distinguish, and appropriately recognize measures that can help individuals and communities adjust to climate-related changes. Adults with adequate climate knowledge may be better positioned to understand why particular adaptation strategies are necessary, the conditions under which they may be useful, and the importance of incorporating preparedness into everyday decisions. Consequently, climate education may contribute to stronger understanding of adaptation strategies and encourage more informed responses to climate-related challenges. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ understanding of climate adaptation strategies. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of climate education on adults’ understanding of climate adaptation strategies. The study is expected to establish that climate education has a positive impact on adults’ understanding of climate adaptation strategies. It is anticipated that adults who receive relevant climate education will demonstrate improved knowledge of adaptation concepts and greater ability to identify appropriate strategies for responding to climate-related challenges. The study may also reveal areas where additional learning is required to strengthen adults’ understanding of practical adaptation approaches. The findings are expected to have important implications for Adult Education practitioners and programme developers. Incorporating climate-related learning activities into adult education programmes can provide opportunities for learners to examine climate scenarios, discuss adaptation options, evaluate practical responses, and connect environmental knowledge with everyday experiences. These approaches may strengthen adults’ understanding of climate adaptation and encourage greater preparedness for changing environmental conditions. The study will be significant to adult learners, households, communities, Adult Education practitioners, environmental organisations, and policymakers interested in strengthening climate resilience. It is recommended that adult education programmes should incorporate relevant climate education that emphasizes practical adaptation strategies, preparedness, resilience, and responsible environmental practices. The study concludes that effective climate education can improve adults’ understanding of climate adaptation strategies and support more informed responses to climate-related environmental challenges.
