Impact of Child-Marriage Education on Adults’ Attitudes toward Early Marriage

Abstract

Child-marriage education is an important aspect of Adult Education that can provide adults with knowledge about the implications of marriage involving children and the importance of protecting children from premature marriage. Adults’ attitudes toward early marriage refer to their beliefs, perceptions, acceptance, or rejection of marriage occurring before adulthood and their views about the factors that influence such practices. Limited knowledge about the consequences of early marriage and the importance of children’s education and development may contribute to attitudes that tolerate or support the practice. This study will examine the impact of child-marriage education on adults’ attitudes toward early marriage, with the purpose of determining whether relevant educational exposure can promote more informed and protective attitudes. Child-marriage education can introduce adults to concepts relating to child protection, children’s rights, continued education, personal development, family responsibility, and the social and developmental implications of early marriage. Through structured learning activities, adults can examine factors that may contribute to early marriage, including social expectations, economic pressures, and community norms. Discussions, case studies, community dialogues, role-playing, and reflective activities can provide opportunities for adults to examine different perspectives surrounding early marriage. Such education can also help participants evaluate commonly held beliefs and develop a clearer understanding of practices that support the wellbeing and development of children. Positive and informed attitudes toward delaying marriage until adulthood are important for promoting children’s protection, education, and healthy development. Adults with appropriate knowledge may be more likely to recognize the importance of allowing children to complete their education, develop necessary life skills, and make major life decisions at an appropriate stage of development. Child-marriage education may influence adults’ attitudes by providing accurate information and encouraging critical examination of social expectations and practices. Improved understanding may therefore help adults develop less accepting attitudes toward early marriage and become more supportive of preventive measures within families and communities. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes and community-based learning activities, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure participants’ exposure to child-marriage education and their attitudes toward early marriage. The research instrument will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while its reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of child-marriage education on adults’ attitudes toward early marriage. The study is expected to establish that child-marriage education has a positive impact on adults’ attitudes toward early marriage. Adults with greater exposure to relevant educational content may demonstrate more informed and protective attitudes and stronger recognition of the importance of delaying marriage until adulthood. The study is also expected to indicate that participatory learning approaches can help adults examine social beliefs surrounding early marriage, understand its potential implications, and develop more supportive attitudes toward children’s continued education and development. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, community leaders, families, child-protection organizations, and facilitators of community education programmes. Integrating child-marriage education into appropriate adult learning activities can provide participants with opportunities to examine the social factors surrounding early marriage and consider alternative practices that promote children’s wellbeing. Community discussions, case studies, role-playing, group reflection, and participatory dialogue can encourage informed consideration of the issue. These approaches may help create supportive community attitudes toward child protection and continued educational opportunities. The study will be significant to adult learners, families, community leaders, Adult Education practitioners, child-protection organizations, and other stakeholders concerned with children’s development. It will recommend that Adult Education programmes incorporate culturally sensitive and evidence-informed learning activities that improve adults’ understanding of child marriage and encourage protective attitudes toward children. Community-based awareness activities may also be strengthened to promote informed dialogue, support children’s education, and encourage appropriate preventive practices. The study will conclude that effective child-marriage education can contribute to more informed adult attitudes toward early marriage and strengthen community support for the protection and development of children.
