Impact of Adult Literacy on the Use of Public Transportation Information among Rural Adults
Abstract
Adult literacy refers to the ability of adults to read, write, understand, and apply written information in everyday situations, while the use of public transportation information refers to the ability of individuals to understand and apply information such as route details, fare notices, timetables, destination signs, transport schedules, and other instructions provided by transportation services. Effective use of transportation information is important for helping rural adults plan journeys, select appropriate routes, understand transportation requirements, and travel safely and efficiently. However, limited literacy skills may make it difficult for some rural adults to interpret written transportation information. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of adult literacy on the use of public transportation information among rural adults. Adult literacy involves learning activities that develop reading, writing, comprehension, and practical communication skills among adults. Through literacy classes, functional reading exercises, writing activities, and practical learning tasks, adults can develop the ability to understand written materials encountered in their daily lives. Functional literacy is particularly relevant because it enables learners to apply literacy skills to practical situations involving signs, notices, instructions, forms, schedules, and other written information. The use of public transportation information involves reading and interpreting transport signs, route information, fare displays, schedules, destination labels, safety instructions, and other written materials provided to passengers. Rural adults may encounter such information when using buses, taxis, motorcycles, trains, or other public transportation services. Adult literacy may therefore influence their ability to understand and apply transportation information correctly when planning and undertaking journeys. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise rural adults participating in selected adult literacy programmes within the study area. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a practical literacy assessment involving transportation-related information designed to measure adult literacy and the use of public transportation information. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult literacy has a positive impact on the use of public transportation information among rural adults. It is anticipated that rural adults with stronger literacy skills will demonstrate greater ability to read, understand, and apply route information, schedules, fare notices, destination signs, and transportation instructions. The study may also establish that functional literacy skills are important for enabling rural adults to make effective use of written information encountered during transportation. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in adult education. Adult educators should incorporate practical literacy activities that expose learners to written information commonly encountered in everyday life. Transportation-related signs, schedules, notices, fare information, and route descriptions can be used as practical learning materials to help adult learners develop reading comprehension and information-use skills. Such activities can make literacy education more functional and relevant to learners' daily experiences. The study will be beneficial to rural adults, adult educators, literacy programme providers, transportation service providers, community organizations, and policymakers. Rural adults may benefit from improved ability to understand transportation information and make informed travel decisions. Adult educators may gain useful information for developing functional literacy activities, while transportation providers and policymakers may use the findings to improve the accessibility and presentation of transportation information for adult users. The study recommends that adult literacy programmes should include practical exercises involving everyday public information, including transportation signs, schedules, route information, fare notices, and safety instructions. Adult educators should use real-life materials and practical demonstrations to strengthen learners' ability to interpret written information. Transportation providers should also present important passenger information in clear and accessible formats. The study concludes that improved adult literacy can strengthen rural adults' ability to use public transportation information effectively.
