Impact of Adult Learning on the Use of Maternal and Child Health Services

Abstract

Adult learning refers to formal, non-formal, and informal learning experiences through which adults acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes, and abilities, while the use of maternal and child health services refers to the utilization of healthcare services designed to promote the health and well-being of mothers and children. These services may include antenatal care, skilled delivery services, postnatal care, immunization, child growth monitoring, family planning, and other appropriate maternal and child health interventions. However, limited knowledge and inadequate awareness may affect the use of available services. Therefore, this study will examine the impact of adult learning on the use of maternal and child health services. Adult learning can provide adults with relevant knowledge about maternal and child health, preventive care, available health services, and appropriate healthcare practices. Through literacy programmes, health education sessions, community learning activities, workshops, discussions, and other educational experiences, adults may improve their ability to understand health information and make informed decisions. These learning opportunities can also increase awareness of where and when maternal and child health services are available and how such services can be appropriately accessed. The use of maternal and child health services involves seeking and utilizing appropriate healthcare services for mothers and children at relevant stages of pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum care, infancy, and childhood. Adult learning may influence this use by improving adults’ health knowledge, ability to understand health information, awareness of available services, and confidence in making informed healthcare decisions. Better understanding of maternal and child health information may therefore encourage adults to make appropriate use of available services and follow relevant professional guidance. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult learning programmes in the study area. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to adult learning and the use of maternal and child health services. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult learning has a positive impact on the use of maternal and child health services. It is expected that adults with greater exposure to adult learning will demonstrate better knowledge of maternal and child health services, greater awareness of available healthcare options, and increased use of appropriate services for mothers and children. The findings will have implications for adult education teaching and learning by demonstrating the importance of integrating relevant health information into adult learning activities. Adult educators may use accessible health education materials, discussions, community-based learning, and practical information sessions to improve learners’ understanding of maternal and child health services. Such approaches can strengthen adults’ ability to understand health information and make informed decisions concerning appropriate healthcare. The study will be significant to adult educators, adult learners, healthcare providers, community health workers, community organizations, policymakers, and researchers. Adult educators may use the findings to develop health-related learning activities that respond to the needs of adult learners, while healthcare providers and community health workers may benefit from improved awareness of the role of adult learning in health service utilization. Policymakers may also use the findings to strengthen collaboration between adult education programmes and maternal and child health initiatives. The study will recommend that adult learning programmes incorporate appropriate maternal and child health education and provide learners with accurate information about available health services. Adult educators should use simple and accessible teaching methods to improve understanding of relevant health information, while healthcare providers and community organizations should collaborate with adult education programmes to support effective health education. The study will conclude that effective adult learning can improve adults’ health knowledge and awareness and contribute to the appropriate use of maternal and child health services.
