Impact of Adult Learning on Adults’ Use of Community Resource Centres

Abstract

Adult learning provides adults with knowledge, skills, and awareness that can improve their ability to identify and make use of available resources within their communities. Community resource centres serve as accessible facilities where adults can obtain information, participate in educational activities, access support services, and develop practical skills. However, some adults may underuse these centres because of limited awareness, inadequate knowledge of available services, or uncertainty about how to access and benefit from the resources provided. This study will examine the impact of adult learning on adults’ use of community resource centres, with the purpose of determining whether adult learning influences adults’ awareness, access, and utilisation of resources available through these centres. Adult learning involves formal, non-formal, and informal learning experiences through which adults acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes, and information relevant to their everyday lives. Adult learning programmes may include literacy education, practical workshops, community-based training, group discussions, and other learning activities. These experiences can improve adults’ ability to identify useful community resources, understand available services, and apply acquired knowledge when accessing facilities such as community resource centres. The use of community resource centres refers to adults’ frequency and manner of accessing available facilities, information, educational activities, training opportunities, and support services provided through such centres. Adult learning may influence this use by increasing adults’ awareness of available resources and improving their confidence in accessing and applying them. Adults who acquire relevant knowledge and information through learning programmes may therefore be more likely to recognise the usefulness of community resource centres and make regular use of their facilities. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adult learners and adult community members who have access to community resource centres in selected communities. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to adult learning and the use of community resource centres. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult learning has a positive impact on adults’ use of community resource centres. It is expected that adults with greater exposure to relevant learning opportunities will demonstrate greater awareness of available centre-based resources and higher levels of utilisation. The study may further establish that adult learning helps adults develop the confidence and knowledge required to identify appropriate services and make effective use of community resource centres. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of adult education. Adult educators may need to expose learners to community-based resources and incorporate practical activities that teach adults how to identify, access, and use available community facilities. Learning activities can also be designed around actual community resources so that adults are able to connect classroom knowledge with opportunities available within their communities. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, community resource centre managers, community organisations, educational planners, and development agencies. Adult learners may benefit from improved awareness and utilisation of resources that can support their learning and personal development. Adult educators and community resource centre managers may also use the findings to develop programmes that better connect adult learners with available community resources. The study will recommend that adult learning programmes should include activities that increase adults’ awareness of community resource centres and develop their ability to use the services provided. Community resource centre managers should provide clear information about available facilities and organise programmes that respond to adults’ learning needs. Greater collaboration between adult education providers and community resource centres should also be encouraged. The study will conclude that adult learning can play an important role in improving adults’ use of community resource centres.
