Impact of Adult Learning on Adults’ Knowledge of Poultry Housing Management

Abstract

Adult learning provides adults with opportunities to acquire practical agricultural knowledge and skills that can improve livestock management and support livelihood development. Poultry housing management refers to the practices involved in planning, preparing, maintaining, and managing housing facilities to provide suitable conditions for poultry birds. Knowledge of poultry housing management is important because appropriate housing contributes to bird comfort, cleanliness, ventilation, protection, and effective production. This study will examine the impact of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of poultry housing management. Adult learning can introduce adults to poultry housing management through practical demonstrations, guided discussions, visual materials, field activities, and hands-on learning exercises. These activities can expose learners to housing layout, space requirements, ventilation, lighting, drainage, cleanliness, litter management, and protection from environmental conditions. Adults can also learn about appropriate maintenance of poultry houses and the importance of keeping housing facilities clean, secure, and suitable for the birds being raised. Such practical learning experiences can make poultry housing concepts easier to understand and apply. Adults’ knowledge of poultry housing management involves their understanding of the basic requirements and practices necessary for maintaining suitable poultry housing conditions. It includes knowledge of housing design, space allocation, ventilation, lighting, sanitation, litter management, drainage, temperature control, and protection of birds. Adequate knowledge can help adults identify appropriate housing conditions and apply suitable management practices. Adult learning may therefore strengthen this knowledge by providing relevant agricultural information, practical demonstrations, guided activities, and opportunities to observe appropriate poultry housing practices. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education, agricultural extension, poultry farming, and community-based agricultural learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of poultry housing management. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of poultry housing management. The study is expected to establish that adult learning has a positive impact on adults’ knowledge of poultry housing management. Adults exposed to relevant learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of housing layout, ventilation, lighting, space requirements, sanitation, litter management, drainage, and bird protection. The study is also expected to indicate that practical demonstrations and field-based learning activities can strengthen adults’ understanding of appropriate poultry housing conditions and improve their confidence in applying suitable management practices. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, agricultural educators, poultry extension personnel, community learning facilitators, farmers’ organizations, and programme developers. Adult learning programmes should incorporate practical poultry housing activities that allow learners to observe housing facilities, identify appropriate features, and practise basic maintenance procedures. Facilitators should also emphasize cleanliness, adequate ventilation, suitable space, proper waste management, and regular housing maintenance to strengthen adults’ understanding of effective poultry management. The study will be significant to adult learners, poultry farmers, agricultural extension workers, community organizations, vocational training providers, and other stakeholders interested in agricultural skills development. It will recommend that Adult Education programmes provide accessible and practical learning opportunities on poultry housing management through demonstrations, guided field activities, visual resources, and supervised practice. The study will conclude that appropriately structured adult learning can improve adults’ knowledge of poultry housing management and strengthen their capacity to maintain suitable housing conditions for poultry production.
