Impact of Adult Learning on Adults’ Knowledge of Nursery Plant Management
Abstract
Adult learning provides adults with opportunities to acquire practical agricultural knowledge and skills that can support crop production, environmental management, and livelihood development. Nursery plant management refers to the practices involved in establishing, caring for, maintaining, and preparing young plants for healthy growth and eventual transfer to their intended growing locations. Knowledge of nursery plant management is important because proper management of young plants requires appropriate watering, shading, soil preparation, spacing, weed control, pest monitoring, and general care. This study will examine the impact of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of nursery plant management. Adult learning can introduce adults to nursery plant management through practical demonstrations, guided discussions, visual materials, field activities, and hands-on learning exercises. These activities can expose learners to nursery site preparation, seed or seedling selection, growing-medium preparation, watering, shading, spacing, weed management, and routine monitoring. Adults can also learn appropriate procedures for protecting young plants from unfavourable conditions and maintaining suitable nursery environments. Such practical learning experiences can make nursery management concepts easier to understand and enable adults to connect acquired knowledge with agricultural activities. Adults’ knowledge of nursery plant management involves their understanding of the basic practices required to establish and maintain healthy plants during the nursery stage. It includes knowledge of nursery preparation, planting materials, watering, shading, spacing, weed control, pest monitoring, plant protection, and routine maintenance. Adequate knowledge can help adults recognize the requirements of young plants and apply appropriate management practices during early growth. Adult learning may therefore strengthen this knowledge by providing relevant agricultural information, demonstrations, guided practice, and opportunities to observe nursery management activities. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education, agricultural extension, farming, and community-based agricultural learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of nursery plant management. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of nursery plant management. The study is expected to establish that adult learning has a positive impact on adults’ knowledge of nursery plant management. Adults exposed to relevant learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of nursery preparation, planting materials, watering, shading, spacing, weed management, pest monitoring, and routine plant care. The study is also expected to indicate that practical demonstrations and field-based learning activities can strengthen adults’ understanding of nursery management practices and improve their confidence in applying appropriate methods. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, agricultural educators, extension personnel, community learning facilitators, farmers’ organizations, and programme developers. Adult learning programmes should incorporate practical nursery activities that allow learners to observe young plants, practise appropriate care procedures, and understand the importance of regular monitoring. Facilitators should also use demonstrations, field exercises, and accessible instructional materials to strengthen adults’ understanding of nursery management and encourage the practical application of acquired knowledge. The study will be significant to adult learners, farmers, agricultural extension workers, community organizations, vocational training providers, and other stakeholders interested in agricultural skills development. It will recommend that Adult Education programmes provide accessible and practical learning opportunities on nursery plant management through demonstrations, guided field activities, visual resources, and supervised practice. The study will conclude that appropriately structured adult learning can improve adults’ knowledge of nursery plant management and strengthen their capacity to apply suitable practices for maintaining healthy young plants.
