Abstract
Building maintenance tools are essential for carrying out routine repair, servicing, adjustment, and maintenance activities in residential, institutional, and community facilities. Adequate knowledge of these tools enables adults to identify their names, functions, uses, and appropriate handling procedures. However, inadequate knowledge of building maintenance tools may limit adults’ ability to perform simple maintenance tasks effectively and safely. Adult learning provides opportunities for learners to acquire practical knowledge and skills that can be applied to everyday activities. This study therefore examines the impact of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of building maintenance tools. Adult learning in this context involves structured and practical learning activities through which adults are introduced to common building maintenance tools and their applications. Such learning may include demonstrations, guided identification exercises, practical activities, discussions, and supervised tool-handling sessions. Through these activities, learners can develop familiarity with tools such as hammers, screwdrivers, pliers, spanners, measuring tapes, spirit levels, wrenches, and other commonly used maintenance equipment. Practical exposure can also help adults understand the differences between tools and the specific maintenance activities for which they are designed. Knowledge of building maintenance tools refers to adults’ understanding of the names, characteristics, functions, uses, and appropriate handling of tools used for basic building maintenance. Adults who possess adequate knowledge of these tools are better positioned to select appropriate equipment for simple repair and maintenance activities. Adult learning can improve such knowledge by connecting theoretical information with practical demonstrations and repeated opportunities for identification and application. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education, vocational, or community-based learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate tool-identification knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of building maintenance tools. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of building maintenance tools. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult learning activities has a positive impact on adults’ knowledge of building maintenance tools. Adults who receive structured learning and practical exposure are expected to demonstrate better ability to identify maintenance tools, explain their functions, distinguish between similar tools, and select appropriate tools for specific maintenance tasks. The study may also indicate that practical demonstrations and repeated hands-on activities contribute more effectively to tool-related knowledge than learning activities based solely on verbal explanations. The findings are expected to have implications for adult educators, vocational instructors, community learning facilitators, and organisations involved in practical skills development. Adult Education programmes may benefit from incorporating practical demonstrations and tool-identification activities into relevant learning sessions. Adequate access to commonly used maintenance tools can also provide learners with opportunities to connect classroom knowledge with real-life maintenance situations. This approach can strengthen practical knowledge while encouraging safe and responsible handling of building maintenance equipment. The study will conclude that adult learning can provide an effective avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of building maintenance tools. It will recommend that adult learning programmes provide practical learning opportunities, appropriate instructional materials, demonstrations, and supervised activities relating to building maintenance. Adult educators should also encourage repeated identification and application exercises to reinforce learners’ understanding. The study will contribute to the development of practical Adult Education programmes that equip adults with useful knowledge for maintaining buildings and handling basic maintenance activities effectively.
