Impact of Adult Learning on Adults’ Knowledge of Bag-Making Techniques

Abstract

Adult learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical and creative skills that can support self-reliance, vocational development, and income-generating activities. Bag-making involves knowledge of materials, design, measurement, cutting, stitching or joining, assembly, finishing, and quality considerations required for producing functional bags. Some adults may have limited knowledge of appropriate bag-making techniques due to inadequate access to structured practical learning opportunities. This study therefore examines the impact of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of bag-making techniques. Adult learning programmes can provide practical experiences through demonstrations, guided instruction, discussions, illustrations, and supervised activities. In bag-making, adults can learn about suitable materials, bag designs, measurements, pattern preparation, cutting, joining or stitching, attachment of handles and fasteners, finishing, and basic quality practices. These activities can enable adults to connect theoretical explanations with practical experience and develop a clearer understanding of the stages involved in bag production. Adults’ knowledge of bag-making techniques refers to their understanding of materials, tools, measurements, design preparation, cutting, joining, assembly, finishing, and safety practices involved in producing bags. Adequate knowledge is important because inaccurate measurements, poor cutting, weak joining, improper assembly, and inadequate finishing can affect the functionality and appearance of finished bags. Adult learning may therefore improve knowledge by providing structured instruction and opportunities for adults to observe and practise appropriate bag-making procedures. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult learning or vocational programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of bag-making techniques. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that adult learning has a positive impact on adults’ knowledge of bag-making techniques. Adults exposed to structured learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of material selection, design preparation, measurement, cutting, joining, assembly, handle attachment, finishing, and basic quality practices. The findings may further show that practical demonstrations and supervised activities enhance adults’ understanding and retention of bag-making knowledge. The study will conclude that adult learning can provide an effective avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of bag-making techniques. It will recommend that adult learning programmes provide appropriate materials and tools, practical demonstrations, supervised hands-on activities, and relevant safety guidance. Strengthening these learning opportunities can enhance adults’ practical and creative knowledge while supporting vocational development and income-generating opportunities.
