Impact of Adult Learning on Adults’ Food Purchasing Decisions
Abstract
Adult learning refers to the process through which adults acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies through formal, non-formal, and informal learning experiences, while food purchasing decisions refer to the choices adults make when selecting, comparing, and purchasing food products for themselves and their households. Food purchasing decisions are important because they can influence household food choices, expenditure, product selection, and the quality of food obtained. However, some adults may have limited knowledge and skills for evaluating food products, interpreting available information, comparing prices and quality, and making informed purchasing choices. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of adult learning on adults’ food purchasing decisions. Adult learning provides adults with practical knowledge and skills that can be applied to everyday economic and household decisions. Through consumer education, health education, literacy programmes, community learning, and other educational experiences, adults can develop skills for reading product information, comparing prices, evaluating product quality, understanding food labels, and considering household needs when purchasing food. Learning experiences can therefore provide adults with knowledge that supports more informed and deliberate food purchasing choices. Adults’ food purchasing decisions involve the choices they make concerning the type, quantity, quality, price, and suitability of food products purchased for consumption. Effective purchasing decisions require adults to consider relevant product information, household needs, available resources, and value for money. Adult learning may influence these decisions by improving adults’ ability to obtain and interpret relevant information, compare available alternatives, and make purchasing choices based on informed consideration rather than limited knowledge. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will consist of adults participating in selected adult learning programmes within the study area. A sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to adult learning and adults’ food purchasing decisions. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of adult learning on adults’ food purchasing decisions. The study is expected to establish that adult learning has a positive impact on adults’ food purchasing decisions. Adults with greater exposure to relevant learning experiences are expected to demonstrate greater ability to compare food products, consider prices and quality, interpret product information, and select foods based on household needs. The findings may also reveal areas where adults require additional learning opportunities to improve their ability to make informed food purchasing decisions. The findings are expected to have implications for adult education teaching and learning. Adult educators can incorporate practical consumer and household education into relevant learning programmes. Activities involving price comparison, examination of food packaging, interpretation of product information, budgeting exercises, and evaluation of different food choices can help adults develop practical decision-making skills that can be applied during food purchasing. The study will be significant to adult learners, households, adult educators, consumer educators, community organizations, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from improved knowledge and skills for making informed food purchasing decisions, while households may benefit from more effective use of available resources when purchasing food. Adult educators and consumer education providers may also use the findings to develop practical learning programmes that address everyday household purchasing needs. The study recommends that adult learning programmes should incorporate practical consumer education and household purchasing skills into relevant learning activities. Adult educators should provide opportunities for learners to practise comparing prices, evaluating product information, assessing quality, and making appropriate food purchasing choices. Consumer education organizations should also collaborate with adult education providers to promote accessible learning materials on informed food purchasing. The study concludes that adult learning can contribute to improved food purchasing decisions by equipping adults with relevant knowledge and practical skills for evaluating food products and making informed choices.
