Impact of Adult Learning on Adults’ Ability to Use Library Catalogues

Abstract

Adult learning provides opportunities for adults to develop information-search and resource-use skills that support independent learning and effective access to educational materials. Library catalogues serve as important information-retrieval tools through which users can identify available books, journals, reference materials, and other resources. However, adults with limited knowledge of catalogue systems may experience difficulties when searching for materials or interpreting catalogue information. This study will examine the impact of adult learning on adults’ ability to use library catalogues, with the purpose of determining whether adult learning activities can improve adults’ ability to search for, identify, and locate relevant library resources. Adult learning involves structured educational experiences that enable adults to acquire knowledge and practical competencies relevant to their needs and everyday activities. In relation to library catalogue use, learning activities may include library orientation, practical demonstrations, guided catalogue searches, information-literacy workshops, group exercises, and individual practice. These activities can introduce adults to different catalogue-search methods, including searches by author, title, subject, keyword, or other available search fields. Repeated practice can help adults become more familiar with catalogue interfaces and develop greater confidence in accessing library resources independently. Adults’ ability to use library catalogues refers to their capacity to conduct effective searches, interpret catalogue records, identify relevant materials, and determine where identified resources can be found. It involves selecting appropriate search terms, understanding bibliographic information, recognizing relevant resource descriptions, and using location or classification details to retrieve materials. Adult learning can improve these abilities by providing opportunities for adults to practise realistic information-search tasks and receive guidance when difficulties arise. Improved catalogue-use skills can make library visits more productive and support adults in finding information relevant to their educational and personal learning needs. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult learning and information-literacy programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and a practical assessment designed to measure participants’ ability to use library catalogues. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of adult learning on adults’ ability to use library catalogues. The study is expected to establish that adult learning has a positive impact on adults’ ability to use library catalogues. Adults who participate in relevant learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved ability to select appropriate search terms, conduct catalogue searches, interpret catalogue records, identify suitable resources, and locate materials. The study is also expected to show that practical demonstrations and guided search exercises can be particularly effective in developing adults’ confidence and accuracy when using catalogue systems. The findings will have important implications for Adult Education practitioners, librarians, information-literacy educators, and community learning providers. Adult learning programmes can include practical library-search activities, catalogue demonstrations, guided exercises, and information-literacy sessions to strengthen adults’ ability to access educational resources. Librarians and educators can also design simple, task-oriented activities that allow adults to practise finding materials based on realistic information needs. These approaches can encourage independent learning and promote more effective use of library collections. The study will be significant to adult learners, libraries, librarians, Adult Education practitioners, educational institutions, and community learning organizations by providing useful information on the contribution of adult learning to effective catalogue use. It will recommend the increased integration of practical library orientation and information-retrieval activities into relevant adult learning programmes. The study will conclude that effective adult learning can improve adults’ ability to use library catalogues and support more independent, efficient, and purposeful access to educational resources.
