Impact of Adult Learning on Adults’ Ability to Identify Sewing Tools

Abstract

Adult learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge and skills that can support household activities, vocational development, and participation in garment-making activities. Sewing tools are essential for measuring, cutting, stitching, shaping, and finishing garments. However, some adults may have limited ability to recognize and distinguish between different sewing tools and understand their specific uses. This study will examine the impact of adult learning on adults’ ability to identify sewing tools and determine how structured learning experiences can improve their recognition and understanding of commonly used tools. Adult learning can provide practical experiences through demonstrations, visual materials, discussions, guided observation, and hands-on activities. In sewing-related learning programmes, adults can be introduced to tools such as measuring tapes, scissors, seam rippers, thimbles, pins, needles, pin cushions, tracing wheels, and other basic sewing equipment. Learning activities may involve observing actual tools, matching tools with their names and functions, classifying tools according to their uses, and participating in supervised practical exercises. These experiences can improve learners’ familiarity with sewing tools and strengthen their ability to recognize them accurately. Adults’ ability to identify sewing tools involves recognizing different tools, distinguishing one tool from another, and understanding the basic purpose for which each tool is used. Accurate identification is important because the appropriate selection of tools can contribute to effective garment construction, safe handling, efficient work, and better completion of sewing tasks. Adults who understand the identity and basic functions of sewing tools may be better prepared to participate in practical sewing activities. Adult learning may therefore improve this ability by combining explanations with direct exposure, demonstrations, and repeated identification exercises. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education and vocational learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate tool-identification assessment designed to measure participants’ ability to identify sewing tools. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of adult learning on adults’ ability to identify sewing tools. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult learning has a positive impact on adults’ ability to identify sewing tools. It is expected that adults exposed to structured learning activities will demonstrate improved recognition of common sewing tools and greater understanding of their basic purposes. The findings are also expected to indicate that practical demonstrations, visual resources, and repeated identification exercises can strengthen adults’ ability to distinguish between sewing tools and select appropriate tools for different garment-making activities. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, vocational instructors, sewing facilitators, and skills-development programme developers. Learning programmes should provide learners with opportunities to observe and handle actual sewing tools rather than relying solely on verbal explanations. Practical demonstrations, tool-identification exercises, labelled displays, and supervised sewing activities can make learning more meaningful and help adults develop confidence in recognizing and using sewing tools appropriately. The study will be significant to adult learners, vocational training providers, sewing practitioners, community skills programmes, and stakeholders interested in practical skills development. It will recommend that adult learning programmes provide adequate sewing tools and practical learning resources to strengthen learners’ identification skills. The study will conclude that well-organized adult learning can improve adults’ ability to identify sewing tools and provide a useful foundation for participation in garment construction and other sewing-related activities.
