Impact of Adult Learners’ Occupational Experience on Their Classroom Participation
Abstract
Occupational experience refers to the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and practical competencies that adults acquire through previous or current employment and work-related activities, while classroom participation refers to the active involvement of learners in classroom discussions, learning tasks, group activities, questioning, presentations, and other instructional activities. Adult learners often enter educational programmes with diverse occupational experiences that may influence how they interact with learning activities. Understanding this relationship is important because previous work experiences can provide practical knowledge that learners may bring into classroom situations. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of adult learners’ occupational experience on their classroom participation. Occupational experience may involve exposure to different work responsibilities, procedures, problem-solving situations, communication practices, teamwork, and practical decision-making. Through employment and other work-related activities, adults can develop knowledge and skills that may be relevant to subjects taught in adult education programmes. The nature and extent of occupational experience can also influence the examples learners provide, the perspectives they contribute, and their ability to relate theoretical concepts to practical situations during classroom activities. Classroom participation involves learners’ willingness and ability to contribute actively to the teaching and learning process. It may include asking and answering questions, contributing to discussions, participating in group activities, completing classroom tasks, making presentations, sharing experiences, and responding to learning exercises. Adult learners with relevant occupational experience may have practical examples and experiences that encourage them to contribute during lessons. Occupational experience may therefore influence classroom participation by providing learners with knowledge and experiences that can be connected to classroom content. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will consist of adult learners enrolled in selected adult education programmes within the study area, from which a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on learners’ occupational experience and their level of classroom participation. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of occupational experience on classroom participation. The study is expected to establish that adult learners’ occupational experience has a significant impact on their classroom participation. Learners with relevant and substantial occupational experience are expected to demonstrate greater involvement in classroom discussions, group activities, practical exercises, presentations, and question-and-answer sessions. The findings may also indicate that the ability to relate workplace experiences to academic concepts encourages adults to contribute more actively during classroom learning activities. The findings will have implications for adult education by emphasizing the importance of recognizing learners’ occupational experiences as valuable learning resources. Adult educators can design instructional activities that allow learners to share relevant workplace experiences and connect them with academic concepts. Case studies, group discussions, practical examples, problem-solving activities, and experience-sharing exercises can provide opportunities for learners to contribute their occupational knowledge to classroom learning. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, programme administrators, curriculum developers, and learning centre managers. Adult learners may benefit from learning environments that recognize and utilize their previous work experiences, while educators may gain useful information for developing instructional activities that encourage active participation. Curriculum developers may also use the findings to incorporate practical and experience-based approaches into adult education programmes. The study will recommend that adult educators should recognize learners’ occupational experiences when planning classroom activities and should provide opportunities for adults to relate workplace knowledge to academic content. Learning activities such as discussions, case studies, demonstrations, presentations, and practical problem-solving exercises should be encouraged. Adult education providers should also promote learner-centred teaching approaches that value the experiences adults bring into the classroom. The study concludes that occupational experience can provide an important foundation for encouraging active classroom participation among adult learners.
