Impact of Adult Education Programmes on the Use of Educational Libraries by Rural Adults

Abstract

Adult education programmes refer to organized learning opportunities designed to improve adults’ knowledge, skills, and ability to apply information in everyday life, while the use of educational libraries refers to adults’ access to and utilization of library resources and services for learning purposes. Educational libraries can provide rural adults with access to books, reference materials, newspapers, digital resources, and other learning materials that support lifelong learning. However, limited awareness, low educational exposure, and inadequate utilization of available library resources may restrict learning opportunities among rural adults. Therefore, this study will examine the impact of adult education programmes on the use of educational libraries by rural adults. Adult education programmes may include literacy classes, continuing education, community-based learning, functional education, and other organized learning activities. These programmes can expose adults to reading materials, information sources, research skills, and methods of locating and evaluating useful educational resources. Through such learning experiences, adults may develop greater awareness of educational libraries and become more capable of identifying and using appropriate library resources for personal, educational, and community-related learning needs. The use of educational libraries by rural adults involves visiting libraries, borrowing or consulting books, using reference materials, accessing newspapers and periodicals, seeking information from librarians, and utilizing available digital or electronic resources. Participation in adult education programmes may improve adults’ confidence, information-handling abilities, reading habits, and awareness of available educational resources, thereby encouraging more effective use of educational libraries. Increased library use can in turn provide rural adults with additional opportunities for independent learning and continuous knowledge development. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise rural adults participating in selected adult education programmes in the study area. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure participation in adult education programmes and the use of educational libraries. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult education programmes has a positive influence on rural adults’ use of educational libraries. It is expected that adults who participate actively in such programmes will demonstrate greater awareness of library services, higher frequency of library use, and improved ability to utilize available educational resources compared with adults with limited exposure to organized adult education. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of adult education by demonstrating the importance of connecting classroom-based adult learning with accessible educational information resources. Adult educators may use library-based activities, guided reading, information-search exercises, and resource orientation to strengthen learners’ ability to benefit from educational libraries. Such approaches may also encourage independent learning beyond the formal adult education classroom. The study will be significant to adult educators, rural adult learners, educational librarians, community learning centres, adult education programme administrators, and policymakers. Adult educators may gain information on how library resources can complement adult learning, while librarians may better understand the needs of rural adult users. Programme administrators and policymakers may also use the findings to improve collaboration between adult education programmes and educational libraries and to expand learning opportunities for rural communities. The study will recommend that adult education programmes incorporate library orientation and practical library-use activities into their learning programmes. Educational libraries should improve awareness campaigns, provide user-friendly learning resources, and strengthen services that respond to the needs of rural adults. Adult education providers and library authorities should also promote stronger collaboration to improve access to educational information. The study will conclude that effective adult education programmes can encourage rural adults to make greater and more meaningful use of educational libraries as resources for continuous learning and personal development.
