Impact of Adult Education on Participation in Community-Based Support Groups

Abstract

Adult education provides adults with knowledge, skills, and awareness that can improve their ability to respond to personal and social needs. Community-based support groups provide organised settings where individuals meet to exchange assistance, information, encouragement, experiences, and practical resources. However, some adults may have limited involvement in such groups because of inadequate awareness, communication difficulties, or limited understanding of the benefits of collective support. This study will examine the impact of adult education on participation in community-based support groups, with the purpose of determining whether adult education influences adults’ involvement in organised support groups. Adult education involves formal, non-formal, and informal learning experiences through which adults acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies. Through adult literacy classes, workshops, group discussions, community learning activities, and practical training, adults can develop communication skills, interpersonal abilities, problem-solving skills, and greater awareness of available community resources. These learning experiences may increase adults’ confidence and readiness to engage with organised groups that provide support and shared learning opportunities. Participation in community-based support groups refers to adults’ involvement in group meetings, discussions, information-sharing activities, mutual assistance activities, and other organised activities carried out by support groups within communities. Adult education may influence such participation by improving adults’ communication abilities, awareness of group activities, and confidence in interacting with other members. Adults who acquire relevant knowledge and social skills through education may therefore be more willing and prepared to participate in community-based support groups. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adult learners and adult community members who have access to community-based support groups in selected communities. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to adult education and participation in community-based support groups. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive impact on adults’ participation in community-based support groups. It is expected that adults with greater exposure to adult education will demonstrate higher levels of involvement in group meetings, information-sharing activities, and mutual support activities. The study may further establish that adult education strengthens the communication, confidence, and awareness required for adults to participate meaningfully in community-based support structures. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of adult education. Adult educators may need to incorporate group-based learning activities that develop communication, cooperation, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills. Practical activities that encourage adults to work together, exchange experiences, and identify available support structures may help learners develop the confidence needed to participate in community-based support groups. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, community-based support groups, community organisations, social development agencies, and educational planners. Adult learners may benefit from improved awareness and ability to engage with support structures, while adult educators may gain useful information for designing learning activities that encourage constructive group interaction. Community organisations and support groups may also use the findings to improve strategies for engaging adults in their activities. The study will recommend that adult education programmes should incorporate collaborative learning activities that develop adults’ communication and interpersonal skills and increase awareness of community-based support groups. Support groups should provide accessible and inclusive activities that encourage adult involvement, while community organisations should collaborate with adult educators to promote awareness of available support structures. The study will conclude that adult education can contribute significantly to increasing adults’ participation in community-based support groups.
