Impact of Adult Education on Dialogue Participation in Divided Communities
Abstract
Adult education refers to organized learning opportunities that provide adults with knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes needed to address personal and social challenges, while dialogue participation refers to the involvement of individuals in structured communication where different views, experiences, and concerns are openly exchanged. In divided communities, meaningful dialogue can create opportunities for people with different perspectives or backgrounds to communicate and develop mutual understanding. However, limited communication skills, intolerance, and inadequate knowledge of constructive dialogue may restrict effective participation. This study therefore aims to examine the impact of adult education on dialogue participation in divided communities. Adult education programmes may include literacy classes, discussion groups, civic learning, workshops, community-based learning, and other structured educational activities. These programmes can develop communication, critical thinking, listening, tolerance, and collaborative problem-solving skills among adult learners. Through interactive learning experiences, adults can acquire knowledge that enables them to express their views clearly, listen to alternative perspectives, and engage constructively with people who hold different opinions. Dialogue participation involves attending dialogue sessions, expressing views respectfully, listening to opposing perspectives, asking questions, exchanging ideas, and contributing to discussions aimed at improving mutual understanding. Effective participation requires individuals to communicate openly while considering the views and experiences of others. Adult education may therefore influence dialogue participation by developing the communication skills, critical thinking abilities, and attitudes necessary for constructive interaction in communities experiencing social divisions. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adults in selected divided communities. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to adult education and participation in community dialogue activities. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive impact on dialogue participation in divided communities. Adults with greater exposure to adult education are expected to demonstrate stronger willingness and capacity to participate in constructive dialogue activities. The study may further establish that improved communication, listening, critical thinking, and tolerance developed through adult education can encourage more meaningful participation in discussions involving differing perspectives. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning because adult education can provide practical learning experiences that develop communication and interpersonal skills applicable to real-life community situations. Participatory methods such as group discussions, role-playing, debates, and problem-solving activities may help adults practise respectful communication and consideration of different viewpoints. Adult educators can therefore use interactive approaches to prepare learners for constructive dialogue within diverse communities. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, community members, adult educators, community leaders, peace educators, education planners, and researchers. Adults may gain improved skills for communicating and interacting constructively with people holding different views, while community leaders may benefit from increased participation in dialogue activities. Adult educators and education planners may also use the findings to strengthen learning programmes that promote communication, tolerance, and constructive community interaction. The study will recommend that adult education programmes incorporate practical activities that develop dialogue, active listening, respectful communication, critical thinking, and tolerance. Community learning centres should also create opportunities for adults to engage in structured discussions on issues affecting their communities. It is concluded that effective adult education can strengthen adults’ capacity and willingness to participate in constructive dialogue within divided communities.
