Impact of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Oral History Documentation

Abstract

Oral history documentation involves the systematic collection, recording, preservation, and organization of personal experiences, memories, traditions, and accounts shared by individuals or communities. Adult Education can provide adults with the knowledge required to understand the importance, processes, and ethical considerations involved in documenting oral histories. Limited understanding of oral history documentation may reduce adults’ ability to recognize valuable community narratives and preserve them for future generations. This study will examine the impact of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of oral history documentation, with emphasis on how educational exposure can improve their knowledge of oral history collection, recording, preservation, and responsible documentation practices. Adult Education can expose adults to oral history documentation concepts through workshops, discussions, demonstrations, interviews, practical exercises, and community-based learning activities. Through these opportunities, adults can learn how oral histories are identified, collected, recorded, organized, stored, and preserved. Learning activities can also introduce adults to interview preparation, appropriate questioning, accurate recording, documentation methods, and the importance of obtaining informed consent from individuals whose experiences are being documented. Practical activities can help adults connect these concepts with the preservation of community memories and historical experiences. Adults’ understanding of oral history documentation refers to their ability to explain the purpose, methods, processes, and ethical considerations associated with collecting and preserving spoken accounts of people's experiences and community history. Such understanding may include knowledge of interview techniques, recording methods, transcription, organization of historical accounts, preservation practices, source identification, and responsible handling of personal narratives. Adequate understanding can help adults appreciate the value of oral accounts as sources of community knowledge while encouraging careful and respectful documentation. Adult Education can therefore provide an important avenue for strengthening adults’ capacity to understand oral history documentation. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ understanding of oral history documentation. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of oral history documentation. The study is expected to establish that exposure to Adult Education contributes to improved understanding of oral history documentation among adults. Adults who participate in relevant learning activities are expected to demonstrate greater knowledge of oral history collection, interview preparation, recording, transcription, preservation, organization, and ethical documentation practices. The study is also expected to indicate that practical interview exercises and community-based documentation activities can make oral history concepts more understandable and encourage adults to appreciate the importance of preserving community experiences. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, community historians, cultural organizations, archivists, researchers, and adult learners. Adult Education practitioners may incorporate oral history interviews, documentation exercises, recording demonstrations, community storytelling activities, and preservation discussions into relevant learning programmes. These approaches can help adults develop practical understanding of how historical accounts can be responsibly collected and preserved while encouraging greater appreciation of community knowledge and lived experiences. The study will be significant because improved understanding of oral history documentation can support the preservation of community memories, experiences, traditions, and historical knowledge for future generations. It will recommend that Adult Education programmes provide accessible and practical learning opportunities covering oral history collection, interviewing, recording, preservation, organization, and ethical documentation. The study will conclude that Adult Education can serve as an important avenue for strengthening adults’ understanding of oral history documentation and promoting greater participation in the preservation of community historical knowledge.
