Impact of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Intellectual Property Rights
Abstract
Adult education refers to organized learning opportunities through which adults acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies for personal, economic, and social development, while intellectual property rights refer to legal rights that protect creations of the mind, including inventions, literary and artistic works, designs, symbols, names, and other forms of intellectual creation. Understanding intellectual property rights is important because adults involved in creative, entrepreneurial, educational, and business activities may need to recognize and protect their intellectual creations and respect the rights of others. However, limited knowledge of intellectual property rights may expose adults to infringement, unauthorized use of creative works, or difficulty protecting their own creations. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of adult education on adults’ understanding of intellectual property rights. Adult education provides adults with opportunities to acquire practical knowledge that can be applied to personal, professional, and economic activities. Through literacy education, entrepreneurship education, business education, community learning, and other adult learning programmes, adults can be introduced to concepts relating to intellectual creations and their protection. Learning activities can expose adults to different forms of intellectual property, including copyright, trademarks, patents, industrial designs, and related rights, as well as the importance of recognizing ownership and lawful use of protected works. Adults’ understanding of intellectual property rights refers to their ability to recognize different forms of intellectual property, understand the basic rights attached to intellectual creations, identify situations involving possible infringement, and appreciate the importance of protecting and respecting intellectual property. Adequate understanding can help adults make informed decisions when creating, sharing, reproducing, purchasing, or using intellectual works. Adult education may influence this understanding by providing adults with accessible information and practical learning experiences relating to intellectual property rights. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will consist of adults participating in selected adult education programmes within the study area. A sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to adult education and adults’ understanding of intellectual property rights. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of adult education on adults’ understanding of intellectual property rights. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive impact on adults’ understanding of intellectual property rights. Adults with greater exposure to relevant educational experiences are expected to demonstrate better understanding of different forms of intellectual property, ownership rights, lawful use of protected works, and basic issues relating to infringement. The findings may also identify areas of intellectual property knowledge where adults require additional educational support. The findings are expected to have implications for adult education teaching and learning. Adult educators can incorporate practical intellectual property education into relevant entrepreneurship, literacy, business, and community learning programmes. Case studies, examples of creative works, practical exercises, and discussions of common intellectual property situations can help adults understand how intellectual property rights apply to their everyday creative and economic activities. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, entrepreneurs, creative workers, business owners, community organizations, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from improved knowledge of how intellectual creations are protected and how the rights of creators should be respected. Adult educators may gain useful information for developing practical intellectual property learning content, while entrepreneurs and creative workers may use such knowledge to make better-informed decisions concerning their intellectual creations and business activities. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate relevant intellectual property education into appropriate learning activities. Adult educators should provide practical information on copyright, trademarks, patents, industrial designs, ownership, lawful use, and infringement using simple and accessible examples. Relevant intellectual property institutions and organizations should also collaborate with adult education providers to expand public education on intellectual property rights. The study concludes that adult education can contribute to improved understanding of intellectual property rights by equipping adults with relevant knowledge and practical awareness of the protection and responsible use of intellectual creations.
