Effect of Literacy Education on Social Adjustment among Internally Displaced Adults

Abstract

Literacy education refers to organized learning experiences designed to develop adults’ abilities to read, write, understand, and use information effectively, while social adjustment refers to an individual’s ability to adapt to social environments, establish relationships, communicate with others, and function effectively within a community. Internally displaced adults may experience difficulties adjusting to unfamiliar social environments because displacement can disrupt existing social networks, routines, and access to educational opportunities. Literacy education can provide knowledge and skills that support communication and interaction in new environments. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of literacy education on social adjustment among internally displaced adults. Literacy education provides adults with opportunities to develop reading, writing, comprehension, and communication skills through structured learning activities. These programmes may involve basic literacy classes, guided reading, writing exercises, discussions, and practical learning tasks. For internally displaced adults, literacy education can provide opportunities to acquire useful knowledge, interact with other learners, understand written information, and communicate more effectively within their new surroundings. Social adjustment among internally displaced adults involves the ability to interact with others, develop social relationships, communicate effectively, adapt to unfamiliar environments, and participate appropriately in everyday social situations. Adults with improved literacy skills may find it easier to understand written notices, communicate their needs, interact with service providers, and engage in social relationships. Literacy education may therefore contribute to better social adjustment by strengthening communication abilities and increasing adults’ confidence in navigating their social environment. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will consist of internally displaced adults participating in selected learning programmes within the study area, from which a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on respondents’ exposure to literacy education and their level of social adjustment. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of literacy education on social adjustment. The study is expected to establish that literacy education has a significant effect on social adjustment among internally displaced adults. Adults who participate in literacy education are expected to demonstrate improved communication, greater confidence in interacting with others, and better ability to function within their current social environments. The findings may also indicate that participation in literacy learning provides opportunities for adults to develop interpersonal skills and establish relationships that can support their adjustment. The findings will have implications for adult education by emphasizing the importance of literacy programmes in supporting adults who experience disruption to their normal social environments. Adult educators can design learning activities that combine literacy development with practical communication and social interaction opportunities. Such programmes can provide internally displaced adults with supportive learning environments where they can develop useful skills while interacting with others. The study will be beneficial to internally displaced adults, adult educators, literacy programme providers, humanitarian organizations, community education centres, policymakers, and other stakeholders involved in adult learning. Internally displaced adults may benefit from improved literacy and communication abilities, while educators and programme providers may gain information for developing more responsive literacy programmes. Policymakers and relevant organizations may also use the findings when planning educational interventions for displaced populations. The study will recommend that literacy education programmes for internally displaced adults should provide accessible, relevant, and supportive learning opportunities that address their educational and social needs. Adult educators should incorporate practical communication activities, group learning, and interactive exercises into literacy programmes. Relevant organizations should also strengthen access to literacy education within displacement settings. The study concludes that effective literacy education can contribute to improved social adjustment among internally displaced adults by strengthening their communication abilities, confidence, and capacity to function within new social environments.
