Effect of Informal Adult Learning on the Preservation of Local Knowledge

Abstract

Informal adult learning refers to knowledge and skills acquired by adults through everyday experiences, observation, social interaction, storytelling, practical activities, apprenticeship, and knowledge sharing outside formal educational settings, while preservation of local knowledge refers to the continued retention, transmission, and use of knowledge developed and maintained within a community. Local knowledge may include traditional skills, agricultural practices, local environmental knowledge, indigenous techniques, food practices, and other forms of community-based knowledge. The gradual decline in intergenerational transmission may threaten the continuity of such knowledge. This study will examine the effect of informal adult learning on the preservation of local knowledge, with the purpose of determining whether informal learning contributes to the continued retention and transmission of local knowledge. Informal adult learning occurs through activities such as observation of experienced individuals, participation in practical tasks, storytelling, community discussions, apprenticeship, demonstrations, and learning from family and community members. Unlike formal education, informal learning is often flexible and embedded within everyday life. Adults acquire knowledge by observing practices, asking questions, practising learned skills, and sharing experiences with others. These processes create opportunities for locally developed knowledge to be acquired and maintained within communities. Preservation of local knowledge involves retaining important community knowledge and ensuring that it continues to be understood, practised, and transmitted across generations. Local knowledge may become weakened when younger and older members of communities have fewer opportunities to interact and share practical experiences. Informal adult learning can provide opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge directly from experienced community members and apply it in everyday activities, thereby supporting the continued existence and transmission of local knowledge. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adults who are involved in informal learning activities within selected communities. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to informal adult learning and the level of preservation of local knowledge. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that informal adult learning has a significant effect on the preservation of local knowledge. It is expected that adults who are more actively involved in informal learning experiences will demonstrate greater retention, use, and transmission of locally developed knowledge. The study may further establish that observation, storytelling, practical demonstrations, apprenticeship, and interpersonal knowledge sharing provide useful avenues through which local knowledge can be maintained. The findings will have implications for adult education practice and community learning. Adult educators and community learning organisers may need to recognise informal learning as an important avenue for maintaining locally relevant knowledge. Learning activities that encourage interaction between experienced adults and other community members can provide opportunities for practical knowledge to be documented, demonstrated, practised, and transferred. The study will be significant to adult learners, community elders, adult educators, community learning organisers, cultural organisations, educational planners, and policymakers. Adults may benefit from opportunities to acquire useful local knowledge through everyday learning experiences, while community members with valuable knowledge may have opportunities to share their expertise. Educational planners and policymakers may also use the findings to support adult learning approaches that recognise and strengthen locally developed knowledge. The study will recommend that communities should encourage informal learning activities such as apprenticeship, storytelling, practical demonstrations, intergenerational knowledge sharing, and community-based learning. Adult educators should recognise relevant local knowledge when designing community learning activities and provide opportunities for adults to document and practise valuable knowledge. Community organisations should also support regular interaction between experienced knowledge holders and other community members. The study will conclude that informal adult learning can contribute to the preservation of local knowledge by creating continuous opportunities for its acquisition, practice, and transmission.
