Effect of Family Education Programmes on Parents’ Participation in School Activities

Abstract

Family education programmes are organized educational activities designed to equip parents with knowledge, skills, and attitudes that can improve their involvement in their children’s education, while parents’ participation in school activities refers to their involvement in meetings, school events, academic programmes, and other activities organized by schools. Effective family education can strengthen parents’ understanding of their roles and encourage closer cooperation between families and schools. However, inadequate parental involvement remains a concern in some schools. This study therefore aims to examine the effect of family education programmes on parents’ participation in school activities. Family education programmes may include parenting education, workshops, seminars, orientation sessions, family-school learning activities, and guidance on supporting children’s education. These programmes provide parents with relevant information about school expectations, children’s educational needs, communication with teachers, and ways of contributing to school activities. Through regular exposure to such educational programmes, parents may develop greater awareness and confidence in fulfilling their educational responsibilities. Parents’ participation in school activities involves attending parent-teacher meetings, school ceremonies, academic discussions, workshops, school improvement activities, and other programmes requiring parental involvement. Active participation enables parents to understand their children’s educational progress and maintain stronger relationships with teachers and school administrators. Family education programmes may influence this participation by improving parents’ knowledge of school processes, clarifying their responsibilities, and encouraging them to become more actively involved in school-related activities. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise parents of pupils in selected schools. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to family education programmes and parents’ participation in school activities. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that participation in family education programmes has a positive effect on parents’ involvement in school activities. Parents who receive relevant educational guidance and opportunities for learning are expected to demonstrate greater awareness of school responsibilities and stronger willingness to participate in school programmes. The study may also show that regular and well-organized family education programmes can encourage more consistent parent-school interaction. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning because increased parental participation can strengthen the connection between classroom learning and support provided at home. Teachers may benefit from improved communication with parents, while pupils may receive greater educational support when parents are more informed and involved. Schools may also use family education programmes as an avenue for creating stronger cooperation between parents and educators. The study will be beneficial to parents, teachers, school administrators, pupils, education planners, and researchers. Parents may gain better understanding of how to contribute to school activities, while teachers and administrators may gain information on strategies for encouraging parental involvement. Education planners may use the findings to improve family-oriented educational programmes, and future researchers may use the study as a reference for further investigations into family education and parental involvement. The study will recommend that schools organize regular and accessible family education programmes that address parents’ educational responsibilities and methods of participating in school activities. Schools should also strengthen communication with parents and create opportunities for meaningful parental involvement. It is concluded that effective family education programmes can provide parents with the knowledge and confidence needed to participate more actively in school activities.
