Effect of Experiential Learning Opportunities on Knowledge Application among Adult Learners

Abstract

Experiential learning opportunities refer to educational experiences through which learners acquire knowledge and skills by actively engaging in practical tasks, real-life activities, observation, reflection, and problem-solving, while knowledge application refers to the ability of adult learners to use acquired knowledge and skills effectively in practical situations. Experiential learning is important in adult education because adults often bring previous experiences to the learning process and benefit from opportunities to connect new knowledge with real-life situations. However, limited opportunities for practical engagement may make it difficult for some learners to apply what they learn beyond the classroom. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of experiential learning opportunities on knowledge application among adult learners. Experiential learning opportunities may include practical demonstrations, field activities, simulations, projects, workplace-related tasks, case studies, role-playing, group activities, and problem-solving exercises. These experiences allow adult learners to participate actively rather than relying solely on theoretical instruction. Through observation, participation, reflection, and repeated practice, learners can connect educational concepts with situations that resemble those encountered in everyday life, employment, business, or community settings. Knowledge application among adult learners refers to the ability to transfer acquired information, skills, principles, and concepts from learning situations to practical circumstances. Effective knowledge application may involve using learned information to solve problems, perform tasks, make decisions, explain situations, or address practical challenges. Experiential learning opportunities can strengthen this ability by giving learners opportunities to practise newly acquired knowledge, receive feedback, reflect on their experiences, and modify their approaches based on what they learn. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will consist of adult learners enrolled in selected adult education programmes within the study area, from which a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on learners’ exposure to experiential learning opportunities and their ability to apply acquired knowledge. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of experiential learning opportunities on knowledge application. The study is expected to establish that experiential learning opportunities have a significant effect on knowledge application among adult learners. Adult learners who are regularly exposed to practical activities are expected to demonstrate greater ability to transfer acquired knowledge and skills to real-life situations. The findings may also indicate that practical engagement, reflection, problem-solving, and opportunities to practise learned concepts contribute to improved ability to use knowledge beyond the immediate learning environment. The findings will have implications for adult education practice by emphasizing the importance of moving beyond theoretical instruction to include meaningful practical learning experiences. Adult educators can incorporate demonstrations, simulations, projects, case studies, field activities, and other hands-on experiences into their teaching. Such approaches can enable learners to test their understanding, connect theory with practice, and develop greater confidence in applying acquired knowledge to practical situations. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, programme administrators, learning centre managers, curriculum developers, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from learning experiences that make acquired knowledge more applicable to practical situations, while educators may gain useful information for designing more effective instructional activities. Curriculum developers and policymakers may also use the findings to strengthen experiential components within adult education programmes. The study will recommend that adult education programmes should provide adequate opportunities for learners to engage in practical activities, simulations, projects, demonstrations, case studies, and other forms of experiential learning. Adult educators should relate learning activities to realistic situations and provide opportunities for learners to reflect on and apply acquired knowledge. Adult education providers should also ensure that available learning resources support practical engagement. The study concludes that well-designed experiential learning opportunities can enhance adult learners’ ability to apply acquired knowledge effectively in practical situations.
