Effect of Cultural Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Traditional Clothing Practices
Abstract
Traditional clothing practices represent an important aspect of cultural identity, heritage, social expression, and the transmission of knowledge across generations. They include knowledge of clothing materials, designs, styles, methods of production, appropriate occasions for particular garments, and the cultural meanings associated with dress. Cultural Education provides opportunities for adults to acquire and strengthen knowledge about their cultural heritage through discussions, demonstrations, practical activities, storytelling, exhibitions, and community-based learning. This study therefore examines the effect of Cultural Education on adults’ knowledge of traditional clothing practices, with emphasis on how educational experiences can strengthen understanding and appreciation of traditional dress. Cultural Education can expose adults to information about traditional clothing materials, patterns, colours, styles, production techniques, and the occasions on which particular forms of clothing are traditionally used. Through practical demonstrations and interactions with knowledgeable members of the community, adults can learn how traditional garments are produced, preserved, worn, and transmitted across generations. Such learning experiences can also help adults understand the cultural values and social meanings attached to different clothing practices. Knowledge of traditional clothing practices involves understanding the characteristics, uses, production methods, meanings, and appropriate contexts associated with traditional garments. Adults with adequate knowledge may be better able to identify traditional clothing styles, explain their cultural significance, recognize appropriate occasions for their use, and appreciate the skills involved in their production. Cultural Education can strengthen this knowledge by connecting adults with cultural materials, practitioners, community experiences, and opportunities for direct observation and participation. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Cultural Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of traditional clothing practices. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Cultural Education on adults’ knowledge of traditional clothing practices. The study is expected to establish that participation in Cultural Education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of traditional clothing practices. Adults exposed to relevant cultural learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of traditional clothing materials, designs, production methods, uses, and cultural meanings. The study may also establish that practical demonstrations, cultural exhibitions, storytelling, and interactions with experienced cultural practitioners can provide effective ways of strengthening adults’ knowledge of traditional clothing practices. The findings are expected to have implications for Cultural Education practitioners, community educators, cultural organizations, and programme planners. Cultural Education programmes may incorporate practical demonstrations, clothing exhibitions, discussions, community documentation activities, and opportunities for adults to interact with traditional clothing practitioners. These approaches can help make cultural learning more practical and meaningful while supporting the transmission of traditional clothing knowledge between generations. The study is expected to be significant to adult learners, cultural practitioners, community organizations, heritage educators, and other stakeholders interested in cultural preservation. It is recommended that relevant Cultural Education programmes provide practical and accessible learning opportunities that expose adults to traditional clothing knowledge and encourage interaction with cultural practitioners. The study concludes that appropriately designed Cultural Education can contribute to improved knowledge of traditional clothing practices and support the continued preservation and transmission of clothing-related cultural heritage.
