Effect of Artificial Intelligence Literacy Education on Adults’ Ability to Use AI Tools Responsibly
Abstract
Artificial Intelligence Literacy Education is increasingly important as artificial intelligence tools become more accessible for learning, communication, work, information seeking, and everyday decision-making. While these tools can provide useful support, adults need appropriate knowledge to understand their capabilities, limitations, ethical implications, and responsible patterns of use. Inadequate AI literacy may result in inappropriate reliance on AI-generated information, misuse of AI tools, privacy concerns, or failure to verify generated content. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of Artificial Intelligence Literacy Education on adults’ ability to use AI tools responsibly and determine whether educational exposure can improve responsible engagement with artificial intelligence technologies. Artificial Intelligence Literacy Education introduces adults to the basic concepts, applications, capabilities, and limitations of artificial intelligence tools. Through relevant learning activities, adults can learn how AI systems generate responses, identify appropriate uses of AI tools, formulate effective requests, evaluate generated information, and recognize situations in which human judgment remains necessary. Education can also expose learners to responsible practices involving privacy, data protection, transparency, attribution, and appropriate use of AI-generated materials. Such knowledge can provide adults with a foundation for making informed decisions when interacting with AI tools. Adults’ ability to use AI tools responsibly refers to their capacity to apply artificial intelligence technologies appropriately while considering accuracy, privacy, ethical conduct, human oversight, and the potential consequences of their use. Responsible use includes verifying important information, protecting sensitive data, recognizing limitations in AI-generated outputs, avoiding inappropriate dependence on automated responses, and using AI in ways consistent with accepted ethical standards. Artificial Intelligence Literacy Education can strengthen this ability by providing adults with practical knowledge and opportunities to examine responsible and irresponsible patterns of AI use. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate performance-based assessment designed to measure participants’ ability to use AI tools responsibly. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of Artificial Intelligence Literacy Education on adults’ ability to use AI tools responsibly. The study is expected to establish that Artificial Intelligence Literacy Education has a positive effect on adults’ ability to use AI tools responsibly. It is expected that adults exposed to relevant educational activities will demonstrate improved ability to verify AI-generated information, protect personal or sensitive information, recognize limitations of AI outputs, and apply appropriate human judgment when using AI tools. The study may further establish that practical exposure to responsible AI-use scenarios improves adults’ awareness of ethical considerations and encourages more careful and informed interaction with artificial intelligence technologies. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners, programme developers, and facilitators. Adult Education programmes can incorporate practical AI literacy activities that allow adults to explore AI tools while learning appropriate standards for responsible use. Facilitators can use demonstrations, guided exercises, scenario-based activities, information-verification tasks, and discussions of ethical issues to develop learners’ responsible AI practices. Such approaches can make Adult Education more responsive to technological changes and help adults develop the knowledge required to engage safely and effectively with emerging AI technologies. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, employers, technology-training organisations, and programme developers by providing insight into the contribution of AI literacy education to responsible technology use. It is recommended that relevant Adult Education programmes incorporate practical instruction on AI capabilities, limitations, information verification, privacy protection, ethical use, and human oversight. The study concludes that Artificial Intelligence Literacy Education can strengthen adults’ ability to use AI tools responsibly and support more informed, ethical, and effective participation in increasingly AI-enabled environments.
