Effect of Adult Learning on Participation in Neighbourhood Improvement Activities
Abstract
Adult learning refers to formal, non-formal, and informal learning experiences through which adults acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies, while participation in neighbourhood improvement activities refers to adults’ involvement in organized efforts aimed at improving the physical and social conditions of their immediate residential environment. Neighbourhood improvement activities may include community sanitation, maintenance of shared facilities, beautification projects, local infrastructure support, and other activities that improve the quality of the neighbourhood. However, limited awareness, skills, and knowledge of community improvement practices may affect adults’ involvement. Therefore, this study will examine the effect of adult learning on participation in neighbourhood improvement activities. Adult learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge through community classes, workshops, group discussions, practical demonstrations, skills training, and other learning experiences. These activities can expose adults to information about environmental conditions, neighbourhood needs, cooperation, planning, resource management, and practical approaches to solving local problems. Through these learning experiences, adults may develop the knowledge and confidence required to contribute effectively to activities aimed at improving their immediate surroundings. Participation in neighbourhood improvement activities involves adults contributing their time, skills, resources, ideas, or labour to activities that enhance the condition of their residential areas. Such activities may include maintaining shared spaces, supporting sanitation efforts, assisting with repairs of communal facilities, improving public spaces, and participating in neighbourhood improvement projects. Adult learning may influence participation by increasing adults’ understanding of local improvement needs and their ability to contribute practical solutions to neighbourhood challenges. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adults who participate in selected adult learning programmes in the study area. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure adult learning experiences and participation in neighbourhood improvement activities. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult learning has a positive effect on participation in neighbourhood improvement activities. It is expected that adults with greater exposure to adult learning opportunities will demonstrate stronger knowledge of neighbourhood improvement practices, greater willingness to contribute, and higher levels of involvement in appropriate improvement activities. The findings will have implications for adult education teaching and learning by demonstrating the importance of connecting adult learning with practical neighbourhood needs. Adult educators may incorporate community-based projects, practical demonstrations, problem-solving activities, group discussions, and neighbourhood learning exercises into adult learning programmes. Such approaches can enable learners to apply acquired knowledge to real-life situations while developing practical skills for improving their immediate environment. The study will be significant to adult educators, adult learners, community leaders, neighbourhood associations, local development organizations, policymakers, and researchers. Adult educators may use the findings to develop learning activities that encourage practical contributions to neighbourhood improvement, while neighbourhood organizations may benefit from increased awareness of how adult learning can support local improvement efforts. Policymakers and community leaders may also use the findings when designing community-based learning and improvement programmes. The study will recommend that adult learning programmes incorporate practical activities related to neighbourhood improvement and encourage learners to identify and address appropriate local needs. Adult educators should use project-based learning, group activities, practical demonstrations, and problem-solving exercises to develop learners’ capacity to contribute to neighbourhood improvement. Neighbourhood associations and community organizations should also collaborate with adult education providers to create suitable opportunities for learners to apply their knowledge and skills. The study will conclude that effective adult learning can strengthen adults’ knowledge, skills, and willingness to participate in activities that improve their neighbourhoods.
