Effect of Adult Learning on Parents’ Understanding of Child Development

Abstract

Adult learning refers to the process through which adults acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes, and experiences through formal, non-formal, or informal learning activities, while parents’ understanding of child development refers to their knowledge of the physical, cognitive, emotional, social, and behavioural changes that occur as children grow. Adequate understanding of child development can help parents recognize age-appropriate behaviours, respond appropriately to children’s needs, and provide supportive home environments. However, some parents may have limited knowledge of developmental stages and appropriate ways of supporting children’s growth. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of adult learning on parents’ understanding of child development. Adult learning provides opportunities for parents to acquire new knowledge and improve their ability to apply information to everyday family situations. Through adult education classes, parenting programmes, workshops, community learning activities, reading materials, and other learning opportunities, parents can acquire information about children's developmental stages and factors that influence growth. Adult learning also encourages adults to relate new knowledge to their previous experiences, ask questions, exchange ideas, and apply what they have learned to practical situations involving their children. Parents’ understanding of child development involves knowledge of the different areas and stages of children's growth, including physical development, language development, cognitive development, emotional development, and social development. Parents who understand these developmental processes may be better able to recognize normal developmental changes, identify appropriate expectations for children, and provide suitable stimulation and support. Adult learning can therefore improve parents’ understanding by exposing them to relevant information, practical examples, and opportunities to discuss issues concerning children's development. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will consist of parents within the selected study area, from which a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on parents’ exposure to adult learning and their understanding of child development. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult learning on parents’ understanding of child development. The study is expected to establish that adult learning has a significant effect on parents’ understanding of child development. Parents who participate in relevant learning activities are expected to demonstrate greater knowledge of developmental stages, developmental needs, age-appropriate expectations, and factors that influence children's growth. The findings may also indicate that regular exposure to relevant adult learning opportunities can strengthen parents’ ability to interpret children's developmental changes and respond appropriately to their needs. The findings will have implications for adult education by demonstrating the importance of incorporating child development knowledge into relevant adult learning programmes. Adult educators can provide practical learning activities that enable parents to understand developmental milestones, individual differences among children, and appropriate forms of parental support. Learning experiences can also encourage parents to reflect on their existing knowledge and improve their understanding through discussion, examples, and practical applications. The study will be beneficial to parents, adult educators, child development specialists, family education providers, community learning centres, schools, and policymakers. Parents may gain improved knowledge for supporting children's development, while adult educators may obtain useful information for designing relevant parent-focused learning programmes. Schools and community education providers may also benefit from greater understanding of how adult learning opportunities can contribute to informed parenting practices and improved support for children's development. The study will recommend that adult education programmes should include relevant child development content in learning activities designed for parents. Adult learning centres and community education providers should organize workshops, discussions, and educational sessions that address children's developmental stages and parental support strategies. Parents should also be encouraged to participate actively in available learning opportunities that provide reliable information about child development. The study concludes that adult learning can serve as an important avenue for strengthening parents’ understanding of child development and improving their capacity to support children's growth.
