Abstract
Fish species identification refers to the ability to recognize and distinguish different species of fish based on their physical characteristics, body shape, colour patterns, size, fins, scales, markings, and other observable features. Adult learning can provide fishers with relevant knowledge and practical skills for accurately identifying fish species encountered during fishing activities. Adequate knowledge of fish species identification is important for proper sorting, handling, marketing, record keeping, and responsible fisheries practices. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of adult learning on fishers’ knowledge of fish species identification. Adult learning can expose fishers to species identification through practical demonstrations, visual learning materials, field observations, group discussions, guided identification exercises, and peer learning. These activities can help learners examine distinguishing characteristics and compare similar fish species using pictures, specimens, charts, and other instructional resources. Practical identification exercises can also enable fishers to connect newly acquired knowledge with species commonly encountered in their fishing activities. Such experience-based learning can make species identification more understandable and relevant to adult learners. The study is significant because improved knowledge of fish species identification can contribute to more accurate fish handling, sorting, marketing, and fisheries-related decision-making. It is recommended that adult learning programmes provide practical and accessible training using visual materials, specimens, identification guides, and field-based activities. Fisheries educators and extension practitioners should also provide opportunities for repeated practice to strengthen adults’ ability to distinguish different species accurately. The study concludes that adult learning can serve as an important means of improving fishers’ knowledge of fish species identification and supporting more effective fisheries-related practices.
