Effect of Adult Learning on Educational Participation among Informal-Sector Workers

Abstract

Adult learning refers to the process through which adults acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies through formal, non-formal, and informal learning experiences, while educational participation refers to the extent to which individuals attend, engage in, and take part in educational programmes and learning activities. Informal-sector workers often have demanding work schedules and responsibilities that may limit their involvement in educational activities. Adult learning can provide flexible and relevant opportunities that accommodate the circumstances of working adults. Therefore, this study examines the effect of adult learning on educational participation among informal-sector workers. Adult learning may take place through literacy programmes, vocational training, workshops, community learning activities, workplace-based learning, short courses, and self-directed learning. These learning opportunities can provide adults with practical knowledge and skills while allowing them to draw on their previous experiences. Flexible schedules, convenient learning locations, practical instructional approaches, and relevant learning content may make adult learning more suitable for informal-sector workers. Such arrangements can provide opportunities for workers to combine educational activities with their occupational responsibilities. Educational participation among informal-sector workers involves enrolment, attendance, involvement in learning activities, completion of learning tasks, and continued engagement with educational programmes. Workers in the informal sector may experience challenges related to working hours, income demands, family responsibilities, and limited access to suitable educational programmes. Adult learning can address some of these challenges by providing learning opportunities that are flexible, accessible, and relevant to workers’ circumstances. Consequently, exposure to suitable adult learning opportunities may encourage greater educational participation among informal-sector workers. The study will adopt a correlational research design. The population will comprise informal-sector workers who have participated in or have access to selected adult learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure adult learning and educational participation. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and an appropriate inferential statistical technique to determine the effect of adult learning on educational participation among informal-sector workers. The study is expected to establish that adult learning has a significant effect on educational participation among informal-sector workers. Workers who have greater access to relevant and flexible adult learning opportunities are expected to demonstrate higher levels of attendance, involvement, and continued engagement in educational programmes. The findings are also expected to indicate that learning opportunities designed around the occupational circumstances of informal-sector workers can encourage greater participation in education. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of adults. Adult education facilitators may need to develop learning approaches that recognize the occupational demands of informal-sector workers. Flexible class schedules, short learning sessions, practical instructional methods, accessible learning locations, and relevant learning materials may encourage workers to participate more actively in educational programmes. Facilitators may also connect learning activities with the practical experiences and needs of informal-sector workers. The study will be beneficial to informal-sector workers, adult education facilitators, programme administrators, adult education institutions, workers’ associations, and education planners. Informal-sector workers may benefit from educational opportunities that accommodate their occupational responsibilities. Facilitators may gain a better understanding of approaches for encouraging educational participation among working adults, while programme administrators and workers’ associations may use the findings to support accessible learning initiatives. Education planners may also benefit from evidence for designing inclusive adult education programmes for informal-sector workers. The study recommends that adult education institutions should provide flexible, accessible, and practically relevant learning programmes for informal-sector workers. Programme administrators should consider suitable learning schedules, convenient locations, short-duration courses, and learning materials that reflect workers’ educational needs. Facilitators should also adopt practical teaching approaches that connect learning with learners’ occupational experiences. In conclusion, appropriately designed adult learning opportunities can encourage greater educational participation among informal-sector workers.
