Effect of Adult Learning on Adults’ Participation in Physical Recreation Activities
Abstract
Adult learning refers to the process through which adults acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies through formal, non-formal, or informal learning experiences, while physical recreation activities involve voluntary physical activities undertaken during leisure time for enjoyment, fitness, relaxation, and social interaction. Regular participation in physical recreation can contribute to improved physical fitness, stress reduction, social interaction, and overall quality of life among adults. However, limited knowledge, poor awareness of recreational opportunities, and competing daily responsibilities may reduce adults’ involvement in such activities. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of adult learning on adults’ participation in physical recreation activities. Adult learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge and develop attitudes that can influence their everyday behaviours. Through learning experiences, adults may gain knowledge about the importance of physical activity, appropriate recreational practices, fitness management, and the benefits of maintaining an active lifestyle. Adult learning can also encourage adults to recognize available recreational opportunities and develop the confidence and skills required to participate in suitable physical activities during their leisure time. Participation in physical recreation activities refers to the extent to which adults engage in activities such as walking, jogging, recreational sports, cycling, dancing, stretching exercises, and other forms of leisure-time physical activity. Regular participation may contribute to physical fitness, relaxation, social interaction, and healthier use of leisure time. Adult learning may influence such participation by increasing adults’ awareness of the benefits of physical recreation and helping them make informed choices about appropriate activities. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will consist of adult learners participating in selected adult learning programmes within the study area. A sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure adult learning experiences and participation in physical recreation activities. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult learning on adults’ participation in physical recreation activities. The study is expected to establish that adult learning has a positive effect on adults’ participation in physical recreation activities. Adults with greater exposure to relevant learning experiences are expected to demonstrate greater awareness of the benefits of physical recreation and participate more frequently in suitable physical activities. The findings may also indicate that adult learning can contribute to better use of leisure time and greater interest in maintaining physically active lifestyles. The findings are expected to have implications for adult education practice and learning programme development. Adult educators can incorporate practical information about physical recreation, leisure management, fitness, and healthy lifestyle practices into relevant adult learning activities. Learning experiences that connect educational content with everyday life may encourage adults to apply acquired knowledge by engaging in appropriate physical recreation activities. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, community organizations, recreation providers, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from increased awareness of the importance of physical recreation and improved use of leisure time. Adult educators may gain useful information for incorporating recreation-related learning into adult education programmes, while community organizations and policymakers may use the findings to support initiatives that encourage active lifestyles among adults. The study recommends that adult education programmes should provide adults with relevant knowledge about physical recreation and its benefits. Adult educators should use practical learning activities and locally available recreational opportunities to encourage participation. Community-based adult learning programmes should also promote accessible physical recreation activities that can be incorporated into adults’ daily and leisure routines. The study concludes that adult learning can contribute to increased participation in physical recreation activities by improving adults’ knowledge, awareness, and appreciation of active leisure.
