Effect of Adult Learning on Adults’ Participation in Knowledge-Sharing Networks

Abstract

Adult learning refers to the process through which adults acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies through formal, non-formal, and informal learning experiences, while knowledge-sharing networks refer to organized or informal networks through which individuals exchange information, skills, ideas, experiences, and useful knowledge. Adult learning can equip individuals with the confidence and communication skills needed to exchange knowledge with others. However, some adults may have limited involvement in networks where useful knowledge and experiences are shared. Therefore, this study examines the effect of adult learning on adults’ participation in knowledge-sharing networks. Adult learning occurs through learning centres, workshops, community-based programmes, professional development activities, peer learning, self-directed learning, and other educational experiences. These learning opportunities enable adults to acquire new information and develop skills for communicating, interpreting, and applying knowledge. Adult learning can also encourage learners to recognize the value of exchanging knowledge with others and create opportunities for interaction around shared learning experiences. Through these processes, adults may develop greater confidence and willingness to contribute knowledge within different networks. Knowledge-sharing networks provide opportunities for individuals to exchange information, practical experiences, skills, ideas, and learning resources. Such networks may exist among colleagues, professional groups, community-based learning groups, associations, and other informal or organized groups. Participation involves contributing information, seeking knowledge from others, exchanging experiences, and maintaining communication within the network. Adult learning may influence such participation by improving individuals’ knowledge, communication abilities, confidence, and willingness to exchange useful information with others. The study will adopt a correlational research design. The population will comprise adults who have participated in selected adult learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure adult learning and participation in knowledge-sharing networks. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and an appropriate inferential statistical technique to determine the effect of adult learning on adults’ participation in knowledge-sharing networks. The study is expected to establish that adult learning has a significant effect on adults’ participation in knowledge-sharing networks. Adults with greater exposure to learning opportunities are expected to demonstrate higher levels of involvement in networks where information, skills, experiences, and ideas are exchanged. The findings are also expected to indicate that adult learning can strengthen the knowledge, confidence, and communication abilities that support meaningful participation in knowledge-sharing networks. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of adults. Adult education facilitators may need to incorporate activities that encourage learners to exchange knowledge and experiences during and after learning programmes. Group discussions, peer presentations, collaborative tasks, and learner-led knowledge exchanges can provide opportunities for adults to practise sharing and receiving information. Such approaches may help learners recognize knowledge sharing as an important part of continuous learning and personal development. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult education facilitators, programme administrators, adult education institutions, professional groups, and education planners. Adult learners may benefit from improved opportunities to exchange useful information and learn from others. Facilitators may gain insight into how adult learning can encourage knowledge exchange, while programme administrators and institutions may use the findings to support learning environments that promote knowledge-sharing activities. Education planners may also benefit from evidence for strengthening adult learning programmes that encourage information exchange. The study recommends that adult education programmes should provide structured opportunities for adults to exchange knowledge, experiences, skills, and ideas. Facilitators should encourage peer presentations, group discussions, collaborative learning activities, and other forms of knowledge exchange within learning programmes. Adult education institutions should also support networks that enable learners to maintain constructive knowledge-sharing relationships beyond formal learning sessions. In conclusion, adult learning can provide an important foundation for encouraging adults’ participation in knowledge-sharing networks.
