Effect of Adult Learning on Adults’ Knowledge of Pastry Preparation

Abstract

Pastry preparation is an important practical food-production skill that involves the appropriate selection of ingredients, accurate measurement, mixing, shaping, baking, and proper handling of pastry products. Adult learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge that can support household food preparation, vocational development, and small-scale entrepreneurship. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of appropriate pastry preparation procedures due to inadequate practical learning opportunities. This study will examine the effect of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of pastry preparation. Adult learning activities in pastry preparation may expose learners to different types of pastry ingredients, equipment, preparation methods, measurement techniques, dough handling, shaping procedures, baking processes, and basic product finishing. Through demonstrations, guided practice, discussions, and practical exercises, adults can develop familiarity with the stages involved in preparing different pastry products. Such learning activities can provide opportunities for learners to connect theoretical explanations with practical pastry preparation tasks. Adults’ knowledge of pastry preparation refers to their ability to identify, explain, and apply basic principles and procedures involved in producing pastry products. This may include knowledge of appropriate ingredients, ingredient functions, measurement, mixing, dough consistency, rolling, shaping, baking temperatures, and basic quality indicators. Effective adult learning may improve this knowledge by providing structured practical experiences that enable adults to understand the sequence and requirements of pastry preparation. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult learning, vocational, or catering programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and a pastry preparation knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of pastry preparation procedures. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of pastry preparation. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult learning may improve adults’ knowledge of pastry preparation. Adults exposed to structured learning activities are expected to demonstrate better knowledge of ingredient selection, measurement, mixing, dough handling, shaping, baking, and basic quality assessment. The findings may also indicate that practical demonstrations and repeated hands-on activities are useful in helping adults understand the different stages involved in pastry preparation. The study will conclude that adult learning can provide an effective avenue for developing adults’ knowledge of pastry preparation. It will recommend that adult learning programmes incorporate practical demonstrations, appropriate kitchen equipment, guided exercises, and sufficient opportunities for repeated practice. Strengthening adults’ knowledge of pastry preparation may support improved food preparation skills, vocational competence, income-generating activities, and participation in small-scale catering enterprises.
