Effect of Adult Learning on Adults’ Knowledge of Livestock Handling Equipment

Abstract

Livestock handling equipment is important in animal production because appropriate equipment helps farmers manage, restrain, transport, feed, and care for livestock safely and efficiently. Adult learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge and skills that can improve their participation in livestock-related activities. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of the equipment used for handling livestock due to inadequate exposure to practical learning opportunities. This study will examine the effect of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of livestock handling equipment. Adult learning activities on livestock handling may expose learners to different equipment used in managing farm animals, including ropes, halters, nose leads, restraining devices, weighing equipment, loading equipment, and other relevant tools. Through demonstrations, discussions, equipment identification exercises, and guided practical activities, adults can learn the names, functions, appropriate uses, and basic handling procedures associated with different livestock equipment. Such learning experiences can help adults develop greater familiarity with equipment used during routine livestock management. Adults’ knowledge of livestock handling equipment refers to their ability to identify, describe, and explain the functions and appropriate uses of equipment used in handling farm animals. It may include knowledge of equipment selection, handling procedures, animal restraint, movement, loading, weighing, and basic equipment care. Effective adult learning may improve this knowledge by combining explanations with practical demonstrations and opportunities for learners to observe and handle relevant equipment. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected agricultural, livestock, or vocational learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and a livestock handling equipment knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of relevant equipment, their functions, and appropriate uses. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of livestock handling equipment. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult learning may improve adults’ knowledge of livestock handling equipment. Adults exposed to structured practical learning are expected to demonstrate better knowledge of equipment identification, functions, appropriate uses, handling procedures, and basic care. The findings may also indicate that demonstrations and hands-on activities are useful for helping adults understand the practical application of different livestock handling equipment. The study will conclude that adult learning can provide an effective avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of livestock handling equipment. It will recommend that adult learning programmes incorporate practical demonstrations, relevant livestock equipment, guided identification exercises, and opportunities for repeated practice. Improving adults’ knowledge of livestock handling equipment may contribute to better livestock management practices, practical competence, safer animal handling, agricultural productivity, and income-generating opportunities.
